Has anyone tried a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4 illuminated FireDot scope on their M&P15 yet? I'm in the market for a low power scope for my Sport and really like the 30mm tube and illuminated FireDot. Just wondering if anyone has tried one and what they thought of it on their M&P?
 
I have one, with the Leupold Mk 2 integrated rail mount. Haven't sighted it in yet, but the eye relief is good. Can't use the BUIS with it, as it sits too far back on the rail for that. Needed to do that for the eye relief. A QD mount would be the best solution, and I'll probably do that when I get around to it.

I like the firedot reticle for low light/fast pickup applications, but it's not a 0 parallax red dot, as there is some magnification (1.25x) at minimums.

It's on my M&P Sport lower with a AAC 300BLK upper. Looks good. I think I'll be happy with it when I get it wrung out.

Added: I skipped the Leupold flip up caps and bought Butler Creek ones. Uses the 13 Eye and an 02A Obj. These fit nice and tight and I think will work just fine.

What would be the advantage of the QD mount over the Leupold? Would it move it forward and higher? I'm new to the world of scopes on this type of weapon and would like as much of an education as I can get.
 
I think he is referencing a QD mount so he can switch easily to the BUIS's. A good QD mount will allow you to take the scope off and reattach it in the same position and stay sighted in. Anyhow that is how I read his post. Good luck, I really like my optics on an AR.
 
OEO is correct. A QD mount would allow you to remove the optic and use then BUIS when/if necessary in short order without unbolting the mount like the IMS2 requires. Leupold makes a QD mount, but there are alternatives (LaRue, for ex.).
 
A friend had the VXR on his AR, it is a very nice scope but in the end he switched to an Aimpoint Micro. He switched mainly because the Micro was quicker for him on close shots.

I have both 1.5-4's and 2-7's on AR's. Both are great scopes. The Firedot reticle is awesome. You can leave it on 24/7/365 and the illumination turns out in 5 minutes without motion. The moment you pick it up, the illumination returns to whatever level it was set on, so the rifle is ready for immediate action around the clock.
 
Would you mind posting pictures? I'd also like to know what mounts you are using and if the front sight being in the field of view is an issue?
 
I've got one on an AR-47 pig gun. ADM QD mount. Nice scope, I wish it had simple on/off and intensity switch. I remove the battery because I travel with it and don't want it to stay on while in the truck. 30mm tube with 1" optics though, so not really a 30mm scope. They should just build this on a 1" tube. Less trouble if you ask me...

I probably won't get another one, but I also won't sell this one

You do not have to take the battery out if you turn the firedot off. Also, building it on a 30 mm tube allows more adjustment range for the reticle.
 
from what i can determine, the dot is never actually "off", just at its lowest setting. And really, how much reticle adjustment do you need in a 4 power scope? It's all hype on Leupolds part if you ask me. My Mark AR 1.5-4 is an awesome scope...if it was illuminated I would not have purchased this 30mm stepchild

You are correct, the dot doesn't turn off, just down. I couldn't see it until I turned off the lights.
 
I have been using Bushnells for years on different rifles. I shot a couple of my Dads rifles sighting them in yesterday. A Nikon, a Zeiss and a Leupold. Unlike me he buys the expensive scopes. I cannot tell you the model numbers, my job was just to sight them in. A Remington in 22-250, a Remington in 25-06 and a Mauser action with a .308 very bull barrel. The order of the rifles matches the makes of the scopes. I really liked the reticle on the Leupold and the nikon but as far as a better scope than my Bushnells, I just dont see it. I have been with him when he drops $500 on optics and tells me that they make all the difference. I do know that good optics make a world of difference but with the computer controlled equipment turning out lenses and such there was not a one of them better than my Bushnell on my Cybersport. yeah the lines on their reticles may be finer and that tiny dot at the crosspoint of the lines is pretty cool and easy to use. but their optics were no clearer, there was no less glare and the distance focus was no better. The three scopes I shot yesterday cost more than my entire gun and optic setup but I didnt see that it was any better. Starting to think just like guns you are paying more for a name. Now I do not own any $49.95 scopes except on my Marlin 795 22lr and the Simmons on it was $49.95. The optics are bright and clear and sharp. I wouldnt put it on my 308 or my sport but it makes me start to wonder about what you are actually getting for the extra $300
 
Update:I built another AR-47 and started moving optics around. The Leupold 2-7x28 I bought a few years ago can't hold a candle to either of these two 1.5's. smaller, yes, but nowhere near as bright or clear. I think I'll look at higher mag versions of each for next optic acquisitions. Glass this good in this $ range means I don't have to hump a big scope anymore. SWsing likes....
