Changing Scopes...stepping backwards but going forward
I was looking back at targets I shot when I was figuring out what I was wanting to do with my Sport. The best groups I have ever shot was with my 8-32x42 Buckmark Horizon (Optronics now owned by Leupold) rifle scope. My groups were half of what they are now. I removed it because I was not using the full magnification and thought I could use less magnification and a larger field of view. I am finding that to be not to be so true so I am going back to the longer scope. Without having the front sight post it is so much easier to mount it. LOL I noticed last night @ 300yrds and the targets I was using that on full magnification the best I could do was to center the crosshairs on the circle of the target. It also was more accurate when hunting Pdogs. There is nothing wrong with my Bushnell 6-24x50 and I have a really sweet .308 that it will work well on but I am stepping backwards to go forward. ![Big Grin](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
(I will post pics soon)

I have a nice Redfield Revolution 3-9 x 40, and a reach out and touch someone 6-24 x 40, but I do my best shooting with a cheap 1X 2MOA Red-Dot out to 400 yards.
I am not shooting PDogs at that distance, and I don't worry about small groups, but I hit what I am aiming at.
I have never used scopes much, and the red-dot just works.
It is nice to see the target better with the magnified scopes, but I just shoot much better with the red-dot.

I have found that I can rarely use higher than 20x on my scopes because mirage gets so bad at higher magnification. My 'wiggle' also becomes LOTS more obvious as well.

With this scope, I can take my glasses off. The adjustable optics on the eyepiece are very good plus the optics stay clear and bright to full magnification. I shot it for a couple of months and was happy with it but felt the reduced field of view hurt me. When shooting at 200 or 300 yards being able to focus on a 1" square does help me. All I have to do is calm down and get my breathing in rhythm and I can make some really good shots with it. I am finding that I have the ability to steady my shots real well but being able to focus on a fine point is important also. We will see how my shooting goes, I have a habit of not getting rid of optics. At this moment in my collection, in their original boxes with paperwork I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn, a 4-16x42 Centerpoint (one that has been on a few rifles and holds zero very well, plus its optics are great) It was one of the first around here and the quality from what I understand may be better than some of their later production. and a 6-24x50 Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn. When I get my palma barreled 308 back from the gunsmith one of these will find a home on it.

Ok I went out to our range and sighted in the 8-32x42 scope that I put back on my "Cybersport". I had looked back through my bullets and found back in May I was loading a bunch with 26.8 grains of CFE223 and thats when I was having my best groups so I took some out with me to use to sight in and then to shoot at 300yds. One thing I did discover was that the Spikes Nickel-Boron Battle trigger is not near as smooth as the Sport FCG that I polished, so I am either going to swap it back or try to polish up the Spikes trigger. I found myself squeezing the trigger and pulling the rifle off target. I had a couple of flyers but overall there was a tremendous improvement. I sighted in at 50 and then moved back to 100yrds to shoot the first group. The first pic is of a 30 round mag with 25 55gr Z-max over 26.8gr of CFE223 and a CCI#41primer@100yrds:
![](http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o551/oneyeopn/10-8-12%20sighting%208-32x40/006.jpg)
Next are some 55gr Armscor over 26.8gr CFE223 same primer@300yrds, you can see me pulling off target with my trigger and I did have a few fliers: ![](http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o551/oneyeopn/10-8-12%20sighting%208-32x40/004.jpg) ![](http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o551/oneyeopn/10-8-12%20sighting%208-32x40/005.jpg)
The next two pics are of 75gr A-max over 25gr of CFE223 and the same primer loaded to 2.255COL@300yrds, I had figured out by this time that I was pulling off of target so I worked harder to not do it: ![](http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o551/oneyeopn/10-8-12%20sighting%208-32x40/002.jpg)
the squares are 1". I was way happier with my shooting but I am going to have to do some trigger work or swap the fcg's between the two rifles and still work on some loads but as I said I was way happier

Good shooting.
In some of your previous posts, I got the impression that you couldn't understand the need for the "Geissele" type triggers.
I would think for someone who likes to shoot tight groups at longer distances, that a high end trigger would be just the thing to complete the package for this type of shooting.
After reading in your post about the consideration of trigger changes for accuracy improvement, are you starting to see the light?

I definitely am starting to see the light, I was so particular about my trigger pull and I could feel it gritty and honestly was pulling my shots off. I am going to try to polish the trigger I have now but see if I can get one of my relatives to get me a better trigger for Christmas, usually I get gift certificates to Midway, so crossing my fingers is what I am doing. Actually my sport trigger that I polished is way smoother than the spikes battle trigger and I may swap them back for the time being.
YES, I am starting to see the light, actually it slapped me upside the head yesterday!!!
I just tested the triggers for LOP and weight, my conclusion is if you are wanting a solid dependable trigger for up close larger targets or in my case to replace the poly FCG in the New Frontier Lower the Spikes Ni-Bor Battle Trigger is dependable. It doesnt lend itself to long distance accuracy shooting, to much takeup and even with a spring kit it still breaks at 4.7lbs, and this is after polishing it. I swapped it out of my distance shooter and put my polished and resprung Sport FCG back in my Cyber Sport, not near as much length and breaks just under 3lbs. I still eventually I am going to get a "real" single stage trigger, maybe if I were to shoot a 2 stage I might change my mind but I havent and I do not know anyone with one so I dont know the difference.
