Need some AR assistance!
I know these threads seem to be a dime a dozen so I apologize in advance!
I've had my heart set on a Sport since August and have had my name on a waiting list since. My LGS (where I have some giftcards) has no clue when they are going to get one in.
For a few reasons (which include pending election and impatience) I'm considering jumping on an OR that they have in stock. It will end up being roughly $200 more than the Sport which is a downside and of course having to pick up some sites. The Sport was appealing due to its cost as well as Melonite 5R barrel.
I just want to make sure I'm making a good decision here and possibly looking for some solid advice on some iron sites I could use for the time being as I build the rifle up.
On a side note this will be my first AR so any advice is much appreciated! I'm am also the proud owner of a M&P FS 9mm which I love.
Jay

Jump on the OR and put a red dot or scope on it, which is what you would do with your sport anyway.
After listening to the debate last night, I'd bet both prices and sales are up nation wide today.
Don't worry about the barrel. My M&P15A and my wife's M&P15 shoot just fine with their old school chromed barrels.

I love my sport but I would be happy with any M&P model. I chose the sport only for price, since it's my first.

Try locating one out of your immediate area & have it transferred into your LGS?
15-Sports are out there. G.A.T. Guns in Dundee, IL has them in stock for $669. At least they had them in stock yesterday.

My only issue is I have $200 worth of gift cards at my LGS to spend so I can get the OR for $700. It would be the exact same price as a Sport if purchased elsewhere and had shipped in.

I agree! His money is just as green anywhere else. If the his LGS can't supply the product than go where you can get one.

How about buying the OR and using the gift cards for all of your accessories. As I'm learning, you'll need more $$$$ for accessories. They're money pits, but I love it.

Price - advantage Sport
Iron sights - advantage Sport, part of the package
Iron sights - advantage OR, if you want to replace the front post on the Sport that will be an issue to deal with later
Accuracy - AR is an accurate platform, maybe a slight advantage Sport and melonite 1/8 barrel at the range, not sure that would be a real advantage in plinking and real world actions
Hand guard - advantage OR, there have been complaints of "hot hands" with the Sport and rapid fire, you'll probably mod it out anyway
FA, Dust Cover, Trigger Guard - IF these are important to you, big advantage to OR
Given your situation, I'd go with the in stock OR and never look back.

Do you plan to leave the rifle bone stock?
I would get the rifle I want...use the gift card on accessories, like ammo, a case, new handguards, etc., if the store could not get what I wanted.
Both rifles are good, just depends on what you want.

No I plan on building the rifle up over time. I'm probably going to squat on this for another week or so and then make a decision.

I'd call around the area for Sports carried elsewhere. $200 is a lot of ammo, so it's not going to go to waste.
Otherwise, just get the OR and go to town. Don't worry about the money part...they don't call ARs "black rifles" because of their finish, they are called that due to the Black Hole that appears in your wallet and sucks out all of your money through buying accessories and ammo for them.

OK, so you could get the Sport shipped in and still use the gift cards.
Unless the gift cards are part of the gun purchase budget and without the use of them there is no rifle, I would wait and get what I want. Actually, I would anyway. I wanted the Sport because of the barrel. I passed up a great deal on an OR, because I wanted the barrel from the Sport. Probably doesn't make a hill of beans difference in performance with me behind the trigger, but I waited and got what I wanted...otherwise you will always have that nagging voice in the back of your head. I give the same advice to people who want a forward assist and dust cover, but are attracted to the Sport due to price...buy what you really want.

I agree with all of this. I have an OR and I am extremely happy with it.
M&P15OR on left (slightly modified), and it's "twin" in .22LR on the right.

This is totally the way to go. We have an OR and my local shop was able to include a UTG red/green dot sight for free. We've since upgraded to a gorgeous Nikon M-223 2-8x32 Riflescope, but can swap the red/green dot in as necessary.
No matter which M&P15 you buy, you'll have upgrade fever within hours.

Is that a dust cover on a M&P 15-22?

That isn't a M&P 15-22...it is a dedicated .22lr AR, guessing a CMMG.

I had an AR before (a heavily Modded Bushmaster), so I did not have to do anything to it.
I went with a Sport... because my LGS had one in stock. I would have bought an OR if they didn't.
Here's why I bought mine:
I wanted a Basic Platform for a project gun, so I can do a build myself.
I liked the 5R Rifling & Melonite Finish
I wanted a lighter weight platform. (No Dust Cov & FA helped that out)
I had been doing research for a year on the Sport.
It came back in stock at my LGS.
The impending election.

A little late, but Quantico Tactical looks to be pretty close to you and has pretty nice prices on M&P's.

The Sport is a great starting point if you intend to do some mods. I was faced with the same choice and I opted for the MOE version of the M&P15 with the chrome bbl. I can live without the FA, but I feel a dust cover is important, The MOE came with almost everthing I wanted except optics, which it now has in the form of a Burris AR332.
