Default Quad Rail for M&P15 OR

Hello guys.
I need some help. I want to put a quad rail on my OR model. I have been reading all kinds of things about this and I am more confused. I don't want anything expensive. I just would like some rails to mount stuff on So I have been reading that some quad rails might mean that I have to change the gas block, and then some are free float and some aren't. I would like to do this myself and keep things simple. I would like to mount a light and a foregrip up there. I don't put a lot of rounds through the gun. I mostly shoot the 15-22. Anyway can I just get a drop in quad rail that will just fit or do I have to go through a bunch of stuff to do this on the OR model? Thanks in advance.

It really depends on what you want to do. There are some drop ins that would simply replace the handguard that you currently have. Not sure how good they would look with the railed gas block, but that would be personal preference.

You could also replace the gas block with a smaller one, and then get a longer rail that would go over the gas block and lengthen your sight radius. These would be the free float variety and more difficult for you to install.

If all you want is a light and foregrip, you can get pieces of rail that would attach to the handguard you already have also. Or, you could get a Magpul handguard and add pieces of rails to attach some accessories as well.

Just depends on what you want and how much money and effort you want to put into it.

I have a UTG quad rail on mine now and have had 2 others in the past. I highly recommend them for what you want. They are made in USA and seem to be very high quality. They run about $55 or less on amazon and for the price can't be beat. I tried 3 other brands before finding this one. I wouldn't use anything else now. Attaches easily and matches my mp15 perfectly.

...what Andyems said. For what you described, you want to get a rail that will be a two piece, drop in rail. Same length (Carbine Length) that you have now. Going any longer or going free float will require a little more work and removal of the gas block, delta ring, springs and such. With the rail recommended above (find a UTG Pro), all you have to do is pull your delta ring back, pop your hand guard off and snap in the new rail just like you would your existing hand guard. Should take all of 4 minutes.

The UTG Pro is a very nice rail and is easy to install. It is heavy though. I prefer the Magpul version that you mount rails on. It is very light and sturdy and you add just what you want. HOWEVER, Grover may accuse you of having an air-soft rifle. Neither of these should take more than 5 minutes to install and neither will interfer with your gas block.

omega tactical's drop in quad rail is inexpensive and hella solid and for 30 ducets, it opens up room in your budget for other goodies

heres the link to amazon

Hey I quit accusing people of that, now that both of mine resemble airsoft rifles, those kids trick them out way beyond what we do anyways. LOL
I would recommend the Omega Tactical, the UTG pro or whatever floats your boat. Even the magpul with rails on it is nice, I dont really have much for rails on mine, I kinda find them uncomfortable to hang on to.

Thanks for the info guys. So basically I can add any drop in rail that is carbine length on my OR without modifications. I like the idea of the MOE with rails added where needed from the weight perspective, but I don't like the looks of the MOE. Someone above mentioned that I might be able to add rails to the factory hand guard that came with the OR. Is that possible? How would that mount and where would I find that? That might satisfy my needs.

I am looking for the same deal, a rail to mount under the original hand guard.

I've tried a 9 slotted Magpul picatinny rail section. The holes do line up but it needs longer screws to make it work. Or some kind of modification to the heat shield on the bottom section o the hand guard. I'm still trying to figure how I want to do it.

Here are a couple I found....I have never used these, so I can't recommend them or offer any advise on them, other than that they are available.

ProMag Handguard Carbine Rail for AR-15 Black

There are tons of others too. Look through the Cheaper than dirt web page, and if you don't want to buy from them due to their pricing policies, you will at least have a name and part number to search for.

I think if I get one of those foregrips with the built on light and laser a rail down the bottom of my stock hand guard would probably suffice. Thank you guys for all of the info and options!

4-rail guards that snap in are a good step and easy to use. But, they are not free float and some care should be taken to not flex your barrel.

Before the craziness just started, I helped a friend put a JP rifle length forearm on his OR along with a low-pro gas block. He went and ordered the JP 3.5T trigger and anti-walk pins directly from JP Enterprises. He upgraded from the UTG guards he originally bought along with the carbine.

I have installed quite a few drop ins for people with different brands of rifles and have yet to flex a barrel. What brand have you dealt with that has a barrel that flexes that easily?

Resting a non-free float forearm on a sandbag and putting too much weight forward will kill your accuracy, regardless of who makes the hardware.

Hence the reason to free float in the first place.

I like both but for the price the Omega Tactical is really hard to beat and it doesnt add hardly any weight at all. but neither does the UTG. They are both good choices.

Hi all
I'm new to this ar stuff and I don't want to hijack this discussion but it seems to fit. After reading about the different accessories I don't know how I know it will work and fit on my m&p. Is there something I'm missing or is the accessories universal?

The accessories have a universal quality to them, although specific rifles can take specific parts but your standard 16" barrel sporting carbine tends to take standard parts, just about (but not all) parts will fit, some may require some modification (i.e. removal of the fixed front sight, replacement of the gas block) but normally not! Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Aboard

Grover answered it. AND if in doubt just ask. There are no stupid questions on here. It's one of the friendliest forums you can find for any help you need on your Modern Sporting Rifle.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. All the pics help too, gives me ideas and an understanding of how it all comes together.
Went and did some target shooting with it for the first time...man this is one nice rifle. I see why everyone is so into it. It's like a Harley, you just keep adding to make it your own.

I finally got around to mounting it. It went on fairly easy but I did have to slightly open up 2 holes so the screws would go in. Since I took the pics I also added a VFG but haven't got pics yet because I might mod it a little. It looks darker than the rifle in the pics because of the flash but in actual light it matches pretty good.

I just got an Omega Tactical quad rail and it seems very well made and it was cheap. I don't understand the prices on a lot of the non free floating handguards. They are basically identical and prices range from the Omega and another one for about $25, all the way up to past crazy expensive. I went cheap.

I have bought along with other forum members the Omega Tactical, yeah the price is lower but the quality is not. Plus the do stand behind their product. One of our members ordered 2, they came in and were slightly out of round, he contacted them and they refunded his money and sent him 2 replacements. Thats customer service!!
