Hello everyone,
I'm a proud new owner of a M&P15OR rifle. This is my first AR, and I have loads of questions. First off this model doesn't come with sights(***), what would you recommend? I'm leaning towards some irons sights to get a feel for the rifle before investing in a scope. I don't want to spend a lot on iron sights, but I do want a quality product. Also I live in Maryland near Baltimore, where can I go shoot this rifle????

Welcome to the forum, and the addiction. There are lots of helpful and friendly people here. There are a lot of questions you need to answer for us to help. There are many many options for iron sights, or back up iron sights. Back up iron sights aka buis. they fold down and out of the way for your optics and can be flipped up. they also can be co- witnessed with your optics. What is you ultimate use for your rifle? Then we can answer some questions. BTW: OR means optics ready... in case you didn't know.

Check out this thread.

I've been using the Magpul MBUS polymer rear sight, and a UTG metal low-profile flip-up front sight as an inexpensive combination. (You shouldn't mount a polymer front sight on the gas block.)

I've been pretty happy with my Sight Mark Ultra Shot QD (SM14000) reflex sight for medium-range work, and it was under $100 from Dunham's Sports, as an alternative to something like the much higher cost units out there. I'm still looking for a reasonably priced/quality scope for longer ranges.

Need to know in what price range you are looking for the iron sights. "not a lot of money" changes drastically from person to person.

I would suggest getting folding sights. That way you can keep them on if you get a red dot optic or a scope eventually, and most folding sights are durable enough to be the only sights if you decide to just stick with irons.

I just got an M&P15 ORC on Tuesday, I currently have the Promag rear and Magpul front flip up sights on. But I have been told that the Mbus mounted on the gas block will melt. So now I am ordering some Diamondhead aluminum intergrated sights. Then later on a good quality red dot sight.

Welcome to the family. I like the Troy Industries and Midwest Industries offerings for BUIS.

Since "OR" stands for Optics Ready, I would be inclined to put an scope or a red dot on it. That is why there were no iron sights on it. ;)

Besides, you can't beat an ACOG no matter how hard you try!

I'd stay away from Troy. I can't stand the current generation that went to a universal mount. I'm sure they are fine but when compared to the previous mount, they don't compare.

Per your statement, I'd go with a Matech rear flip up sight. Great sight that you can get for around $40 - $50. Front is up to you but I ran a cheap mount from my 15-22 that was a fixed mount for the longest time. You'll ignore it if you go with a red dot optic. Or, check out the new MBUS Pro (Not the Polymer Sights) from Magpul. Those are on my short list.

I put a carry handle on mine that I bought from gunbroker. For a front sight, I have a fixed yankee hill machine front sight bolted to the gas block. It's important to note that the height of the gas block rail is at the same height as the receiver rail.

Private Proerty

Thanks for all the input, I think I'll look into Magpul fixed sights or Troy. Researching Red dots now. Anyone know if you can shoot your weapon on private property in Baltimore County?

Another vote for Troy. If you are like most you will probably end up with a RDS rather than a scope (for a carbine) but you will not regret putting the money in the Troy sights.

Rather than trust internet wisdom, you'd better check with your local sheriff as to where you can shoot.

For good user reviews on red dots check out opticsplanet.com they have a wide selection and pretty solid pricing.

Good choice and good plan with getting a good set of irons before buying a scope. I would learn to shoot great with your irons and learn what you want to change with your gun before you spend money on a scope.

I purchased the Troy folding Battle Sights for front and year. Since the the rail on the gas block is on an even plain with the flattop rail on the upper receiver, you don't have to worry about buying the specific front gas block sight. Magpul makes a decent BUIS, but the gas block could potentially give you some problems with the front sight since it's poly (metal will be better since the gas block can get really hot).

Have fun with your OR!
