Hey guys,

I am switching out the muzzle device on my AR M&P Sport to something else besides the stock A2 flash hider. I'm going back and forth between something like the Vortex from Smith Enterprises or YHM 5C1 / 5C2 and a muzzle break like the DPMS Miculek / YHM 5M1, etc.

Any suggestions would be great, right now I found a Yankee Hill Machine 5M1 break from 20 bucks but I didn't know if the flash hider or something else would be nicer.

Not too concerned about muzzle flash but recoil management is more important to me, even on a 5.56..

Thanks in advance.

If you're main concern is recoil management, a muzzle break is what you are looking for. Flash hiders generally do little to nothing to help with recoil management/muzzle rise. Muzzle breaks also will make your firearm louder.

Some products claim to do both but in reality they do ok at both (or do better at one than the other) and excel at neither. The YHM 5c2 you are considering claims to do both but most people are reporting it's a very nice flash hider and a poor muzzle break, to the point of some not noticing any difference in muzzle rise from the A2, YMMV.

IMO you are better off getting a dedicated muzzle break, as you say recoil management is your main goal.

disclosure: I don't have any personal experience with anything other than the A2, but I'm just about to pull the trigger on the YHM 5c2 myself, and I've done exhaustive research on this issue. For what it's worth, Youtube was the best, many videos had slow motion of many muzzle devices so you could see their results very clearly

Like vinney said alot of the hider/break combos do an OK job. If you really want to control recoil go with a muzzle break. There are tons of different ones to choose from. Just do your research. Smith Enterprises makes some really nice ones. I own 2 Stag Arms muzzle breaks that work really well but man are they loud. The person next to me gets concussed.

Your choice of the Smith Vortex is excellent for a combo unit, reducing flash and muzzle rise to a degree. Take a look at the Rainier Arms XTC for a cool looking brake that works well as a compensator. (I guess that is kind of redundant-- meant hider)

I have the Rainier Arms XTC on mine and I am happy with it. It also looks good on my AR but looks is not everything. :)

Very happy with mine also, that is the point I attempted to make. Also like my Vltor compensator VC-1 both have a positive effect on muzzle rise.

This is my Spike's Tactical Dynacomp. Definitely reduced muzzle rise and with a good shoulder and cheek weld, I can keep this thing extremely flat and on target for follow up shots. Downside with most comps is increased noise and concussion. This is no different. Upside is that it throws out a sweet fire ball. :)

I'm using a PWS FSC556. It's a good combination brake/flash hider. It compensates well for muzzle rise and is about as good as an A2 for flash suppression. Loudness is somewhere between a typical brake and an A2 FH.

For a brake only, the Mikulec brake is good for the money and the SJC Titan is considered the most effective conventional brake. The most effective overall and likely the most blast/noise will be had with the JP tank style brake.

Awesome posts and pictures guys. Thanks again. Has anyone tried the YHM 5M1 or 5M2? It looks like the phantom but is a pure muzzle brake. It is going for 21 bucks at Primary Arms (so are the flash hiders)....

Haven't tried one myself but for $21 from a reputable dealer, you really can't go wrong. Looking forward to your review!

I'm also running a dynacomp and I like it a lot. Very good muzzle flip reduction without being over concussive. It's less concussive than the battle comp I used to have.

I went with the Troy claymore brake. Looks mean and directs all the blast out the front. I really like it but you can get two YHM for what I have in the claymore

A couple of years ago, I was squadded with a gent with a Michelick(sp?) brake. Both the noise and muzzle flash were stunning on a covered firing line.

It depends upon what your priorities are.

Personally, the best muzzle brake for a .223 is a floor/deck. Lay down on it and do 15-20 pushups a day.

I ended up getting the YHM 5M1 for 22 bucks at Primary Arms, 3 bucks for shipping. I'll put it on and let you all know how it goes. All the youtube videos of this model suck by the way.
