Hey y'all, another decision that I'd like some input on from the gang here. I'm looking into an EOTech 512 A65 for my Cot 6920. I love the reticle design and the window field of view. Now I just want the opinions of the members on the 512. I know there's a big Aimpoint following here but I'm just not a big fan of the tube style of red dot. Nothing against Aimpoints, I just prefer the holographic sight design. I like the 512 since it's the most economical, and being a college student that's a plus, and AA batteries are in quick supply and well priced as opposed to the CR123's used by other models.
So, what say you on the EOTech 512?

I have one on my Bushmaster flattop. I really like it. I find it very easy to use, feels like cheating.

I do like Eotech myself the only negative feedback I have come across is the sight going down because of battery position and recoil, while I don't have first hand with those issues that kept me from getting one. I suggest to keep saving and get one of the newest models with the different battery position, saving a few dollars now may be quite expensive in the long run so I suggest to get what you want from the beginning.

EOTech 512: Built like a tank. It's been off and on the rail several times and has always held zero. I do think some of the smaller models would help cut down on weight. But as the weight and size go down, the price goes up. That being said, it might be worth looking at a 516, or 556 depending on the depth of your pockets. Which ever you choose, you will be well served.

Luv that 512, always ready and circle dot is so easy to pick up target. Only drawback is it's large size and weight..important only if you are trying to go light weight. If you can try a Redfield Counterstrike you might be pleasantly surprised.

I have a 512 on my Daniels Defense. It is without a doubt the best optic for an M4 platform IMO. Use industrial alkaline batteries and your good to go for a long time. I prefer the large sight lens.
Remove the batteries when not in use. The best price I found when shopping for one was at Sportsmans Guide. "Scopecoat" also makes a great waterproof cover for these. Hope this helps.

What Vinny says about batteries is really important non alkaline WILL fail when you would rather they did not. I do not take the batteries out as I want it ready for use and the sight has an auto shutoff. If you leave them in check often for corrosion.

I like the 512. It's great stuff.

So it's alkaline for the sights and lithium for the lights? I have been running the lithium in both. I didn't know any better I guess.

I'm also an EoTech fan, although I've got the EXP2 model. I've had great results with it so far.
I'm not knocking the 512, but if you have or anticipate having a shortage of rail space for mounting sights or a possible magnifier down the line, you might want to consider spending just a few more dollars and getting one of the newer models such as the EXP2. It's not only smaller in size and takes up less rail space, but it uses a smaller lithium battery that has a longer life than alkaline batteries, and since the battery is smaller it sits sideways instead of inline with the barrel. Some people say that sitting inline can cause problems with the battery contact because the recoil can cause the batteries to be pushed back when the gun is fired. Yes, the AA batteries are cheaper and a little easier to find than the A123 battery used in the EXP2, but the battery life is so long that I don't feel that is a problem.
I don't know if that is really a problem, but in my opinion, the shorter overall length of the EXP2 series is a big improvement and worth the few extra dollars.

Just an update on this, no matter which model you choose, EOTech is running a special from now until January 31, 2014 which features a $60 rebate on a lot of EOTech products. I thought this might help. I have no connection with EOTech, but saving $60 is a big deal for anyone.

I bought an M&P15ORC from Gander Mountain that came with a 512. It's a great entry level unit, does what they claim!! If I were to upgrade I would consider an EXP2 due to the saved rail space. Something to consider if you plan on running BUIS. The NV models are pretty cool too if you can justify the need for them, they are a bit more pricy.

I've ran an EOTech on my 12 gauge semi-auto now for several years...but it is not a 512. I prefer and would recommend one of the newer designs, such as the XPS2. The battery mounted at a 90 degree angle to the recoil impulse prevents the kind of problems experienced with 512 type models. The XPS2 also puts down a notably smaller footprint on the rail.

Here are two EOTechs on my shotgun's rail...you can see how much less the XPS2 (top photo) uses.

I bought mine from Primary Arms when they were running a special which included a magnifier and free flip to side mount.

Love the combo. Gives lots of flexibility for indoor or outdoor ranges.

Primary arms still offers the free magnifier + eotech has a $60 rebate right now.

Also I wouldn't get an eotech unless your getting the new model that takes the cr123 battery sideways.

Thanks for the input and advice everyone, I did get an email from Primary Arms about the rebate which only reinforces my plans of getting one soon. I did get an opportunity to handle a 512 yesterday and absolutely loved the reticle, and liked the sturdiness of the optic. I don't really plan on using a magnifier as I only shoot out to 100-200 yards when I shoot, so rail space isn't an issue. One more question folks, how do y'all co-witness your EOTech? I currently have a primary arms micro dot on a lower 1/3 riser, so that's what I'm used to and somewhat prefer. But I'm also aware that with both eyes open the FSB goes out of focus quite a bit when absolute co-witnessed. So how do you prefer your co-witnessing?
