Default 2 AR's, 2 platforms

Hello,

I have been on this forum for a while but haven't posted any topics on here. So here is my first post!

I already have a m&p-15or which I have put on a vortex strikefire on it. I'm picking up a windham hbar this week and I don't want to add another close quarter so to speak optic on it. I'm thinking of putting a scope on it so I can reach out and touch targets in the 200-400 yard range. Now my question is should I go ahead and should I switch optics and put the strikefire on the heavier rifle and the scope on the lighter one. I see pros and cons for both scenarios. Just trying to get se more opinions other then my own. Also when I do decide to get a scope to shoot out to that range where should I start looking? And my price range is in the 200-275 range. Thanks for all the help and suggestions in advance.

Place the scope on the rifle that will be most likely used at 200+ yards. Adequate accuracy at less than that can be achieved with your red dot or even iron sights.

I'm fond of low power variables on my AR's in the 1-5 or 2-8 range. Anything else looks the the rifle is mounted on the scope, not the other way around. Remember that at 8 power a 400 yard target will appear to be the same size as one at 50 yards. Unless you are shooting prairie dogs you should be able to achieve adequate accuracy at that range with 8 power. Besides, the real advantage of a scope is that everything is on the same focal plane, not the magnification.

Your price range for a scope is high enough that you can buy decent optics. Both Bushnell and Nikon make dedicated AR scopes in your price range.

Redfield battlezone. I got one from optics planet with a Burris pepr mount for 229. It was a package deal. Check prices, look at some reviews.I am very impressed with this scope and mount.

I have 2 AR's for same usage as yers

My M&P Sport is more accurate and is my Long range Thumper.. i have a bushnell 6-24 scope on it and really Like it... I would probobly get a Nicon scope now though.. a bit better eye relief would be better

My Bushy Carbon 15 is Much lighter so i use that with my Eotech for Up Close and personal.... works real well

So if you plan on plunking more with the Closer Gun, I'd go Light there and use the heavy Gun for long Range... unless there is a Big Accuracy difference... then the Accurate one for Long Distance..

IMO, bring both rifles to the range. Bring along some good target ammo. Mount the scope to each rifle. Whichever one gives you the best accuracy at range, leave the scope on that one.

I'm just thinking that the hbar is going to be heavier so I was thinking just put the scope on that. And the strike fire on the mp15

The thing is that while 1:9 barrels should all behave the same, sometimes they don't. They each have their own quirks. CQB or say under 150 yards, no biggie. Stretch it out, and the barrel quirks can become more evident, ammo sensitivity becomes more evident.

Just make sure you bring along inexpensive ammo to zero the scope to get on paper. Then make sure you have enough rounds of the same brand & composition of premium factory ammo (preferably from the same production lot) for accuracy testing.

Reloading takes it to the next level. You are then tailoring a round for a specific rifle for performance to a specific distance. You control every component and construction detail of the ammunition. Once you get a round dialed in, you can repeatedly and consistently produce the same round.

I put a Leupold vx2 3x9 with the LRD reticle on my M&P15T. Last fall I took it out west to Wyoming with me on a mule deer hunt. Not to use for deer but to shoot prairie dogs hoping to bag a deer early. Being a Michigan born native and never hunting deer anywhere else but in the woods, long range shooting was something I had done little of. Been shooting all my life and am now 55years old. Practiced some distance (to me) quite a bit before I left, out to 300 yrds. I was amazed that I could hit those little buggers out beyond 400 yards with my old man eyes. The two mil dots on the reticle are just enough and the pointed top of the heavy post below the dots is almost right on at 400 yrds. That scope will stay on that gun forever. I love it. It was about a $300 scope
