M&P 15 Sport joined M&P 40c on Tuesday to keep the peace and provide entertainment for old guy that lives here.

That's a rare picture! A M&P 15-Sport in it's OEM virgin state.

Congrats on your new 15-Sport and welcome aboard! If you have any questions, just ask. You'll get a bunch of different helpful opinions.

If he reads much of your stuff it won't be a virgin for long.

A small part of me regrets not keeping my 15-Sport as it came out of the box. It was the perfect, light weight, keep-it-simple-stupid AR-15. That same small part of me thinks I ruined a good thing.

You could always underss it. Light, red dot, sling, BAD lever (came in the mail today...thanks Rastoff)...back to basics, and think how much money you'll make selling all that extra stuff!

That would make too much sense. This black rifle fever victim's solution was to build an AR-15.

OP, you might want to keep your distance from me. Black rifle disease is contagious, and I'm in the terminal stage.

Dude, you're not even close. I have three built up rifles (16" carbine, 16" mid length, 20" rifle length) and two more lowers awaiting parts. One has iron sights and a drop in forearm. One has a 1-4x24 Leatherwood scope and a free float forearm. The last has an EOTech, free float and I added a muzzle brake. All my guns will have free float forearms and muzzle brakes from now on. Currently looking for a second brake and a 1:8 twist heavy barrel. I have an AR-10 80% lower on order.

The AR really is Legos for adults. John, you're just hovering at the rim of the rabbit hole. I've jumped in with both feet.

Welcome to the abyss tacreload.

While I don't have but two AR-15's, I was more of a "let's try that funky doo-dad part". It's how I ended up with a NiBX BCG, hudraulic buffer, KNS anti-rotation pins, this and that...

I just ordered a PSA premium full-auto BCG. I'm slowly acquiring the parts to build a 300 AAC Blackout upper. That means I'll need reloading dies... and probably cutting down .223/5.56 cases...

I've also toyed with the idea of building an AR pistol and mounting that funky not-a-shoulder stock but you can legally shoulder it "brace"... get to avoid the SBR gubmint may I form and tax stamp.

*bonks head against wall*

Tacreload... keep your 15-Sport as is. If you want to mount a budget dot, get a Primary Arms Micro-Dot bundle. Stay away from nut-jobs like myself and Rastoff. Your wallet will thank you for it.

Sports are so cheap right now if you want a stock one there's no sense taking parts off one you already modded. Buy another!

I have to say that I thought the whole purpose of the M&P Sport was to leave it stock.

If you start adding things, you might as well start with the M&P15X, with its quad rail. The M&P15X is the closest thing S&W sells to the Colt LE6920SOCOM, which is the closest thing "we" can buy to the M4 "real deal."

That was pretty much my intention with mine. I just wanted to add a scope and use it for coyote hunting.

I held out for a while. Just replaced the furniture with a magpul moe fde set and added a Troy receiver mounted sling swivel.

I'm about to order a Geissele trigger.

After that I swear I'm done.

That Sport looks great! I bought mine used and previously modified, so I have to view stock rifles vicariously through your pics.

As for that irresistible feeling to change things on your Sport, resistance is futile. Just submit, pull your wallet out, dump the contents on the LGS counter, get a bag and tell the clerk to fill it up. Believe me, there are plenty of folks around here to help funnel your cash into someone else pocket.
But I wouldn't know anything about that.

Good Luck and good shooting.

Just remember, before you dump your cash at the local gun store, talk to us. It's just possible that we have what you need and can get it to you for less.

I believe that the majority of 15-Sport owners go in with the intention to leave the rifle as is. It was mine. Then I wanted to install handguards with heat shields. They're not expensive so why not? Then I wanted a cool Magpul stock. They're not expensive so why not? I have Magpul handguards and a stock, why not add a Magpul grip? That was the beginning of the modification slippery slope for me. It just snowballed from there.

This is the earliest picture I have of my 15-Sport. I never bothered to take one of it in it's virgin state.

EDIT To ADD

Oh good lord, I just noticed I have a BAD lever on it. The modification disease really progressed quickly in the first three months of ownership. Magpul parts are the gateway "drug" to the modification addiction.

^ Tell tale sign of a modification enthusiast (addict). I can't recall how many times I say that in a given week.

John that's my intent, for now.Would like to add a scope eventually.Unfortunately I really enjoy reading the information from nut jobs like you and Rastoff and the others. You guys are great and a wealth of knowledge. So I figure I will probably slide down that slope somewhat. Thanks for the encouragement.

Just an early warning. Start saving for another gun safe too

Resistance is futile YOU ARE assimilated and it's a full blown obsession. Once you've read about, hear, see, touch, smell a Sport MSR (actually ANY M&P), the Rabbit Hole turns bottomless and it's only one way once you slip past the edge.

While you're not watching the M&P handguns will sneak in on you. Then there are the MSR's in 308 that start catching a "look see" and end up following you home....

The give away is when you start thinking, reading and looking at reloading equipment.... Then there isn't any turning back.

So dive in. The water's great !!! And remember. You are helping pass our heritage down to the next generation too. Stay Safe and Shoot Straight.

The AR Gods grabbed me as soon as I got mine home. I just seen money running out of my my wallet. It is a addiction that is for sure, and if some says that it is not, then they are a liar. If I would have to do all over again I would hands down.

I'm gonna have to be the "house liar" I guess.

I'm 59 years old and have had guns all my life. My first was a single shot bolt action 22 that would taks 22 shorts and 22 longs. My father got it for me when I was 6, and we went rabbit hunting with it when he was stationed in South Dakota (he took his 12 ga). It being a single shot taught me to make every shot count.

It wasn't the gun I enjoyed, it was the hunting and the gun was simply a tool to that end.

I've been a hunter my whole life, everything from squirrels to elk and bear, and always had the appropriate gun, the appropriate TOOL. I've enjoyed and appreciated the guns as I would any other quality tool that makes a job easier and more efficient.

Now, with my gun focus being mainly home/self defense and SHTF nothing has changed. My Sport is the same as all my guns have been...a tool. I just happen to like quality tools.

Nice in theory (on a budget) and raising a family. Please don't take this wrong. Been there done that. But it's easier said than done leaving things stock.

Actually leaving anything "stock" (esp. a weapon that's being used),is harder to do than people realize. You can buy the M&P15X,but it's still not a Sport is the problem. Same with the 6920. It's still not a Sport. People like and want the Sport. Cheap in price NOT quality along with an old brand name made in the USA, a lifetime warranty with product support.

I bought my M&P15T first. Was thinking along the same line as you. If I'm going to do about the same to a Sport anyway.... Guess what,I still bought the Sport later and LOVE it.

Looked at all the LE6920's in different set ups and all the sales persons blah blah about just how great they are (box store idiot). I went home with the LE6940 because (I already did my homework), it came freefloat with fold down iron sights and he NEVER mentioned a thing about that one except a much lower price than what was marked on it when I asked him if they could do better than that price.

Not that I'll never own a LE6920. It's just not that high on my list and I haven't tripped over the just can't walk away price yet.

Now I'm waiting on a list for an "in house" CNC machined upper & lower custom hand built MSR due out in the 3rd quarter of 2014.

That sounds pretty interesting!

The Geissele is on the way to sort of see how I like it in the Sport. I have a 20" RRA predator pursuit upper/undecided on the lower build in mind. I wanted to check out the Geissele to see if I want it or a single stage Timney in the more accurate rifle.

Took me 3 times to figure them EOTech people out. Even tried different sights too. Actually their sights are VERY reasonably priced (come with free batteries too). Built like little tanks with all that armor around them. Seen one fall off a shootin' bench one time and hardly scratched it !! Bet it would have bounced better with-out the rifle on it though. They getcha with that $485.99 fancy box they hide it in with the molded foam interior. Those sliding double locks on the lid and rugged injection molded plastic boxes they come in gotts to be the high dollar end. They might even be rubber sealed too. But... ...I guess if it's wet out and you want to play EO keep-away,you should have the box just in case it might land in the mud and you don't have a garden hose around to blast the mud and dirt out.

I hear the CMMG lowers fit quite well.

I've always prefered the single stage myself. But I'll let you know some time after the 3rd quarter... (keep telling myself) change can be a ggood thing..maybe.

For the newbs that don't know...

Usually in December or January EoTech runs a rebate program. Buy a new EoTech sight get $$$ back.

Christmas sale price -$60 rebate = EoTech 512 cost me less than $400

Way ahead of you. Well, at least I thought I was. I bought the biggest safe I could fit through the door. Not long ago, I bought an optic and now I need a new safe. Seriously, just adding the stupid optic forced me to rearrange the safe just to be able to fit the guns in there.

Believe it or not, I'm designing a new safe because of this. A friend and I have the drawings done. We just need a welder to build the prototype. You have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes.

I have these too. The internet will be the death of me. I'll walk to the mailbox and there's a package. "Hmmm, I don't remember buying this???" Yeah, that's happened a few times.

Dude forget building a safe. If you have a spare guest room that has a big closet, turn it into your gun room. Turn the closet into a giant vault. Put up some steel framing, get a welder to weld in some mild plate steel, frame the door using some box steel tube, then install a heavy duty door with a bio-metric lock. Have an electrician put in a power recepticles for lighting and for a dehumidifier.

If you're going to go down the rabbit hole, might as well go down the rabbit hole.

Late this year I'll be burying a shipping container as a root/storm/SHTF cellar...does that count?

Spare room? Have you not been following this discussion? Dude, all my money has gone to guns. We live in a tent and my kid wears burlap sacs for clothes. They jump for joy if I bring home Ramen soup for dinner rather than a keg of gun powder.

Seriously, I actually have plans on selling this safe. If what we've dreamed up can be built, it's better than anything I've seen on the market as far as security is concerned. Right now I'm just concerned that we won't be able to build it cheap enough.

They are pricey, but I've never seen a cheap used one at a LGS. DO watch for the rebates and keep an eye on Brownells & Cabela's. They run "seasonal" specials now and then too. Beware of internet knock-offs,they are out there. You do get your monies worth and they are combat rugged.

A gun store near me is having a sale next week. They are offering $20 off and no tax on EOTech optics. In the ad they have an M&P-15 Sport for $559. I'm going to have to go drain all the gas out of my truck to keep myself from going broke.

Amazing how one MSR and just adding a scope can miss match the puzzle inside a gunsafe. They don't stand side by side very well scoped either. Doing a 180 turn on every other one isn't much help either. They like their space....

What I get a kick out of is two gun carry cases. Not in scoped MSR rabbit land.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. I can get two ARs, with optics, in the bag I pictured. Isn't that what you were talking about?

For the most part yes. But. Are they both full scoped (like the size of something 8-25X40)? In that photo are they scope up or scope down ? What's keeping them from beating each other to death ? They strapped down snug ? Have a devider between them ?

I'm talking about soft cases more like this if the link works.

http://www.brownells.com/shooting-ac....aspx?psize=96

If you can bring it up. You'll see how hard it would be to stuff two scoped MSR's in there. I prefer this style of case.

Here's your answer on Rastoff's bag. From the Midway website of it "The drag bag has a complete divider wall for 2 gun storage"

Looks like a good bag for the price.

Well, I wouldn't put a 8-25X40 on an AR, but yes, it would fit. Also, the case you linked isn't intended to hold two rifles.

The case I linked does have a padded divider. Now, it's intended for long distance rifles so, it's longer than most MSRs need. Still, I can get both a 20" MSR with 1-4x24 on it and a 16" with EOTech and magnifier in this case at the same time.

I'm also a pragmatist. The case has straps to strap the rifles down, but I don't/wouldn't use them. For the average trip to the range, they're not necessary. If I were traveling on an air plane, this is not the case I'd use anyway.

Any soft case is not designed to protect against being dropped out of an airplane or off the back of a truck. Even so, the case protects well for traveling to a range or competition location. If you like, I'll try to get pics of it with two rifles in there later.

Well I'll be! I had no idea they even MADE cases for dropping out of an airplane...it must be some case that allows a gun to hit the ground at terminal velocity...

Believe it or not, there are some amazing cases out there.

The Air Force has tons of Pelican cases we use for just about everything. If you think the Samsonite gorillas are tough, you should see a bored Airman out on the flight line. Yes, those things will withstand an unbelievable amount of punishment.

For airline travel, my guns will go in nothing less. I have a Pelican 1700 that I use to transport my shotguns. I believe it could be dropped from 10,000' and survive. Not so sure about the gun inside, but I'd give it a 50% chance if the foam is cut properly.

Ok. Lets try this again. Click on the link and look over on the right at those cases and LOOK at those in the long up and down line with different color and size bags.. There ARE DOUBLE BAG cases there if you spend some time looking around. Might take a look at the video, that also shows a double case. The video also mentions the double bags.

As for smallest scope it's a 4-16X42. to 4-16X50 for one of the larger. I do put long range scopes on and prefer long range shooting. Close in I have irons or EO's with magnifiers. And I have one on it's way that's 10-40X56 for my 308 coming late Summer.

Putting two guns in one case is out of the question.

Hmmm, well, OK. I'm pretty sure your setup would fit two of them in the case I pictured. Sorry, I did miss the double case part.

The rifle they showed in the video had a pretty big scope on it. Based on the specs, I don't see why the double case wouldn't hold two guns. The double gun case basically is just two of them put together. At least that's how I read it:

Quote:
SPECS: 1000 denier Cordura Plus nylon exterior, black, coyote tan, or O.D. green. 35” (89cm) long, 11” (28cm) wide, 2½” (6.4cm) high. Front Pocket - 10½” long, 8” (20.3cm) wide, 2” high. Double Rifle Case includes additional outer shell- 33” (84cm) long, 10½” (26.7cm) wide, 2” (5.1cm) high.

Can't hurt to try it. Brownell's offers an unconditional lifetime guarantee. If you don't like it, send it back. I've never had to use it, but I'm sure they wouldn't ask any questions.

The whole point of what I was getting at is that there are cases out there that will fit two rifles. The one you linked to is a little more than I'd like, but it's made in the USA. The one from Midway is made in China, but the quality seems quite nice.

Here's a pic of mine with two rifles in it:

I don't know if you can make it out, but there's still some room over the top of the scope. A bigger scope would still fit in there nicely. I know this isn't your first choice in bags, but it would work. I think the other would work also, but that's just me. This one costs about 1/2 as much.

I don't know what your main purpose is for this case. This one has served me well so far. I haven't really put it through a lot of abuse, but it seems durable enough. Just throwing it out there for consideration.

That was the best photo I could find that showed more of what I was getting at. My bag of choice (Molle) is about half that price, holds up just as well, matches the padding+,sides are semi-ridged and has more storage. I like a padded snug fit from my "soft" cases. I don't like two monkeys wrestling in a gunny sack fit. Don't like the thought of a couple $500-600 Nikons beating each other up in the same case and I want them still on zero when I get there to shoot. My cases can go from my Crew Cab to Jeep to 4 wheeler and have come home smelling like a horse over the years. I use heavy duty hard cases for some extremes.

Your case does look much better opened up and seeing it. Thanks for the photo.
