I got a Midway email a few day ago, showing the Caldwell Mag Charger on sale for $59.99. Sounded good, but then you always have to add shipping fees. I searched for the loader on Google, and found one advertised on eBay for $54.99. Upon checking the eBay site, they were not only were cheaper, but offered free shipping. Then I found the seller was also showing an extra 30% off all orders over $50. So I ordered it and it came to $38.49, what a bargain. List price is $89.99 through the manufacturer, Battenfeld Technologies, who is the parent company for Caldwell Shooting Supplies, and seeing it for $60 to $70 is normal.

The eBay seller is "a1bargains", with a very high eBay customer rating. For under $40, I could not resist, and I ordered it. I waited until I received it, until making this post. From order to delivery was three days, Ohio shipping to Florida. The loader arrived in the retail packaging, in perfect shape. This is what I always question with eBay sellers, you get a lot of repackaged items, likely rebuilt/remanufactured. The loader I got was perfect, and brand new.

I have read that some that bought the loader had a learning curve, as to how to use it. My learning curve, was how to load it, as I dumped 50 rounds into it and they all fell out. I had the loading carrier out, when the carrier is supposed to be pushed fully in. After that mistake, I figured I needed to read the directions. It was easy to load correctly. I inserted a 30 round Magpul mag, and with 6 quick pumps of the plunger, the mag was fully loaded in about 7 seconds. Worked fine for me, the first time, except for my loading screw up.

I would definitely recommend the Caldwell Mag Charger, and at $38, it was only about $10 more than a Lula (Maglula) loader, which I also use. The Caldwell loader is much faster than hand loading with the Lula loader. The Caldwell Loader is made of very heavy duty plastic, well made, and is easy to load and use. It looks like it will last a long time.

Are loading AR mags really that difficult? IMO, this is completely unnecessary!

It all depends on how much loading you are doing. This is not a "required" extra, especially if you are only loading a few mags. The loader would benefit those who are loading a quantity of mags, or have difficulty loading mags. It is fast and easy on your hands, and you can load 10 mags in around 6 minutes, taking your time. If you had all the ammo pre-staged in 50 round containers, you could easily load all 10 mags in about 3 minutes. The one mag I loaded took 7 seconds, but you have to allow the time to remove the loaded mag, insert the next empty mag, and fill the loader after 50 rounds. You don't have to pre-stage the ammo, as you can manually drop the ammo into the loader's ammo holes. But to get the benefit of the speed, if you are loading 30 round magazines, you need to have a minimum of 30 rounds in the loader, before starting.

The loader holds 50 rounds, so to load the first 30 round magazine, you pump 6 times (5 rounds loaded per pump) and then replace the full mag with an empty mag. You then push the plunger 4 times to load the remaining 20 rounds, left in the loader. Then refill the loader with another 50 rounds, and 2 more pushes on the plunger, and the second mag is loaded. Then replace that full mag with an empty mag and repeat. If you think how long it takes to hand load one mag at a time, and the pressure you have to exert to get those last five rounds loaded into the mag, then you understand the advantage this type of loader makes.

A Lula loader eliminates the pressure on the fingers, but you are still only loading one round at a time. This loader loads 5 rounds per push of the plunger, and is fast as you can push in, pull out, and push in again. I made this thread to advise to how to buy the loader at a bargain price, and my first experience with using it.

If, like me, you're "lucky" enough to have arthritis in your hands, then loading any ammo magazine is no joy. Magazine loaders are definitely my friends.

Regards,

Dave

So let me get this straight, you have arthritis and have trouble loading a magazine, yet you are operating an AR-15?

I've got arthritis in both my hands, rods in my back, two artificial hips, a prosthetic aortic valve, and walk with a cane. I still operate an AR-15, M1A, M1 Garand, and several different types of handguns.

What's your point?

Yes, pretty well too, I might add. I can also operate an M-1 carbine, a Ruger 10/22, and a Marlin 1894 lever action rifle chambered in .357 magnum. That's it for long guns. In hand guns, I'm able to operate a H&K P-7, a Browning Hi-Power, a S&W M&P 40c, a CZ-75D in 9mm, a plethora of S&W J-frame revolvers (my EDC is a Model 638-1 and a Model 38-0), a CZ-82 in 9mm Makarov...I could go on, but to answer your question, yes, I can operate an AR-15.

Why do you ask?

Regards,

Dave

Yeah, thecatch8. Why do you ask and what's with the tone? The ,man should be thanked for passing on a deal and for finding ways to shot what he wants.

Some use them for convenience, some use them due to arthritis or other health reasons.

I am blessed to not need one for health reasons, and the 15 yr old doesn't need anything to help him burn through my ammo any faster! :D

That's why I don't buy them. If I made loading mags easier then I'd be more inclined to burn through ammo faster.
I should invent something that makes loading go slower, not faster. Think of the money that would be saved, lol.

OP if your happy with gadgets why should someone tell you that you don't need it. If you want it and can afford it the go for it. I wasn't interested in the Caldwell as I fell it's just as fast or faster to use the Lula but for your price I would have tried it.

I guess you got the only one he had, no more for sale.

Now I don't need one but would have bought just to see if it was any faster then the Lula (Maglula) loader. I have bought each of the other type of loaders just to see which I liked best. So far I have the M-16 / AR-15 LULA, the M-16 / AR-15 StripLULA, the ProMag RD USGI Magazine Loader, NcStar AR15/Mini 14 Mag Loader/Unloader, and numerous for handguns. I guess I'm a sucker for gadgets. It sure does save my thumbs when I load my Beta C mag or my KCI mag. Even if I'm only using a 30 round mag for a day I use 10 to 15 of them and that makes for a sore thumb. I guess next will be the McFadden lightnin' grip loader as I already have their Cliploader.

Why does it always come up that you don't need something. Heck we don't need computers but we all have them.

You should invent this, something that gives you a little zap of electricity every time you insert a round :D

Thank you for posting this. I just checked on eBay, and the deal you quoted is apparently no longer available. Instead, they are offering 20% off of orders of $250.00. I think you got a great deal, and I wish I had taken the time to act on it when you initially posted it.

Regards,

Dave
