Can anyone tell me what bi-pod I can but for my basic m&p sport 5.56. I would appreciate any help I can get, this is my first ar15. Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum!
It is all about preference and how your gun is setup.Some bipods might fit as is and others might need accessories to install.As I am not familiar with the S&W M&P I'll leave it to others to tell you what works best.
It never hurts to educate yourself outside of the Forum by doing a Bing or Google search on the subject.There are plenty of websites that not only sell bipods but can help you choose which one serves your purpose.
While you are at it go to the New Members area and introduce yourself to everyone.

You can buy from the very cheap to the very expensive. The question is, do they do what they are intended to do. I got a very cheap spring loaded forward grip bi pod given to me and the thing works. When deployed it provides a raised rest for the rifle. 12 bucks on line. Or a very expensive Harris? Does the same thing, maybe with more bells and whistles and probably better than mine, but it does what it was intended to do. So does my cheapie. It all depends on budget and choice.

I've got a Harris mounted using their own adapter on a box stock AR hunting rifle. It isn't cheap, but having gear fail on a hunt ruins my day.

This bi pod is built like a tank, the controls are very positive, it extends enough that you can use a 30rnd magpul magazine and collapses to a nice compact size. Look at the reviews and questions.
And since I have a Magpul carbine length hand guard, I got this so I could mount the pod:
