Mike, which M&P 15? They start around the $550 mark and go up from there. For a basic, bare bones rifle, take a look at the M&P 15 Sport. That is the least expensive rifle in the line up.

As a basic carbine, the Sports is an excellent model.

I just picked up an M&P 15T for $800. Free floating quad rail, flip-up sights, 16" 1:8 5R melonite barrel. Pretty sweet rig IMO

You can find them online for $550 anytime. Sometime a bit less. GrabaGun sells them for $550 plus $5 shipping.
Sport really is a good deal if you want that specific configuration. But to buy it because it's inexpensive with the idea of changing stuff it will be more expensive than excellent alternatives like BCM where you can buy the rifle in pretty much any configuration you want and excellent quality.
