Sport 2, is this normal??
I have just recently purchased a new smith and wesson m&p15 sport 2 a few days ago and didn't notice it when I bought the gun that the finish on the barrel all most looks like its striping off around the whole barrel I'm just wondering if I'm paranoid or the finish is really messed up, let me know what you guys think. Im really just worried about it rusting and alittle bit of it is my ocd wanting it to be perfect

Looks like rubs from being placed on and removed from a rack. Given that there are high expectations of another run on AR-15's due to the election year cycle, it could be some rough handling at the factory as they increase manufacturing quota's to take advantage of the increased demand.
I wouldn't worry about it.

I would wipe the barrel and other metal surfaces down with CLP first. I've found that many modern sporting rifles have finish irregularities that will even out after a rub down. That's where I'd start. Break-FreeŽ Gun Cleaners : Cabela's

Completely normal, the finish on any rifle is never completely perfect, and even if it is never will be after it's been used. Rub it down with some Balistol or CLP and forget about it by shooting a load of ammo through it.

Many of these types of finishes are wiped with oil at the factory to give a deep black appearance and act as a corrosion inhibitor. IMO what you are seeing is the trails left by the lighter factors in that oil evaporating.

I'm thinking oil rubs as well, not actual finish issues. Even if it were finish issues, as you shoot it the rifle will get banged up and you won't even put a second thought into it. I'm totally anal and that would not bother me.

I've soaked the barrel in hopes elite gun cleaner and scrubbed it but it still looked the same and nothing came off, maybe it will just come off over time and hopefully I'll just get over it eventually since its nothing actually wrong with the finish

Don't just scrub it, oil it. I've got an older M&P that has a spot in the finish the size of a quarter where the finish didn't take well. The gun still works. I ignore it.
