I want to replace the barrel because the sight is in the way when looking through my new scope. Ive seen that removing the sight would kill the warranty, so i want to just replace the barrel, I'm not sure if it is as compatible as all the other interchangeable AR parts in the world. Ive looked on the S&W site and the full uppers cost more than i paid for my entire rifle and they dont sell just the barrel. anyone know what i need to know before getting another barrel?

I am guessing that you are not familiar with the AR and how it operates if you want to replace the barrel due to the front sight...

That front sight is more than just a sight, it is the gas block. The gases go through it, down the gas tube, and push the bolt back to pick up the next round when fired. If you want to get rid of the front sight, you simply need to replace it with a low profile gas block, not a new barrel.

If you have the scope mounted at the proper height, and it is more than 4x magnification, you should not even see the front sight.

i knew it was the gas block, but like i said, i saw that if i remove it that it would void the warranty, meaning remove and replace with a gas block minus the sight. but yes, i just saw in the picture forums that a lot of people have both, so i may go try it out and see if its even an issue. its a 10x zoom. could be im worried about nothing :)

You don't think changing barrels would have the same affect on the warranty?

You've got a $500 rifle that isn't proprietary. All parts can be purchased from a zillion different vendors. The notion of buying a new barrel for $100-$200 to protect a warranty on $500 rifle makes little sense.

Forget about the warranty, do what you want with the rifle.

Just dremel off the A2 and file it smooth. Like Chatt said, it's a cheap(ish) rifle and changing a barrel makes no sense. I did this to 2 of mine and could not be happier.

I have a Nikon P-223 Carbine Scope (3x) on my Sport II. It is mounted on UTG .83" mounts, and I cannot see my front sight when looking through the scope.. I think you are worried about nothing... Mount your scope and see if you have the problem before changing anything...

JMHO

Dave

I have a Nikon P223 3x9x40mm scope on my S&W Sport II and I never see the front sight.

LOL, at least you took the time to answer a question that has been answered a 100x before.
