Hey guys, new guy here. I have a bit of a dilemma. I removed one of my front site pins (the front one) from left to right, yes I know backwards (that's what I get for listening to someone on another board). I am going to replace the front site, was wondering if the barrel is now junk?

Thanks

It should be fine, just removing those pins is going to be even more difficult that they were before and you might need new pins.

No, the barrel is not damaged. Just take the other one out the correct way. I've removed a few of them and always forget which way until I start hammering. :0

Just use a new gas block that doesn't require the pins.

Ok, the front pin was removed backwards but the rear pin was removed correctly. How do I tell if I need new pins & and where can I get them? Would it be an issue if I picked up new front sight to install or is front sight that I have machined to this barrel? Gun is stock configuration.

Thanks for the input

The barrel should be harder than the pins. It's certainly possible that you've damaged the hole, but we can't know unless we examine the barrel.

You should get new pins, but why? Just get a gas block that doesn't need pins. They're cheap.

If you're not putting the A2 front sight back on (which I assume you are not since you said you want to replace it) you won't need pins if you get a different style low profile gas block. I agree with @JaPes in that I like the clamp on blocks better too. The thing is with any new gas block, just make sure you get the gas holes lined up properly before tightening.

I am keeping the A2 front sight, just removed it to update with a one piece hand guard. The reason I would replace it is because one of the pin holes is enlarged from driving the pin out the wrong way.

Should be fine, assuming you pressed it out rather mangling it with a punch and hammer then just slap some red loctite in with the pin you forced out the wrong way when you put it back, even with only one pin the FSB is not going anywhere.

Ok, if you really like that front A2 post, but me personally if I went to all that work to take the A2 off I'd just put a low pro gas block on there and free float a rail. By doing that you have so many more options with rails and you get improved accuracy. But hey, it's your rifle do what you want.

Keep in mind that some screw down gas blocks require you to dimple the barrel, then set the screws into the dimples. I prefer a clamp on style gas block.
I've never seen one that required the barrel to be dimpled. I have used both set screw and clamp style. I too prefer the clamp style. They seem to give a slightly better hold and tend to stay put without resorting to chemicals.
