Hey guys I'm new to this forum and new to modifying AR's in general. I got a Sport 2 and really want to add a free float hand guard. I am really confused about what to do as far as ordering one.

So I see there are different lengths, rifle, mid, carbine. When I am looking at free float guards, the vast majority of the 15" guards are listed as "rifle" or "mid". My buddie has a Sport 2 and has a 15" free flat on his (I believe it's a Troy). My question is, does it matter that it is made for "rifle" or "mid" length gas systems when my Sport 2 has a much shorter "carbine" length gas system?

Part of me says "well you cant buy a rifle length free float or else is would be listed as "carbine" and not "rifle" ya noob" but then another part of me says " well Cam has a 15" free float, what does it matter what size gun I have, I'll just put a low-profile gas block on it and install the hand guard over it just like his"

So my question is, if I buy a 15 inch free float hand guard for a "rifle" length AR, can I buy a low-profile gas block and have the handguard fit on my "carbine" length gas system AR?? I just don't understand why that wouldnt work but don't want to spend the money and find out somehow it doesn't

I greatly appreciate any help and shared knowledge.

You can purchase any length when you go with a low profile block and free float hand guard, as the hand guard only attaches at the barrel nut and does not depend on an end cap.

Yes you can. I haven't done it myself but it can definitely work. I would look at specs for the ID of the handguard and the OD of the lo-pro gas block because I don't know that every combination will work.

Every combination won't work, but the majority of low profile gas blocks fit under most free float rails.

I had one that was close when I had a Diamondhead rail. That rail is flat on the bottom and my lp gas block almost rubbed on the bottom because of the flatness. I could get a piece of paper between the two but I was never comfortable that the two didn't actually touch when shooting (not that its a huge deal, but still it negates the free float). I sold the rail and put on a Troy and it fits fine.
