Just recently purchased a Sport II & I'm looking to purchase a scope for my 1st Mod. Looking to set it up as a Mid Range gun ( 50 to 150 Yrds ) Moderately Priced ( $100 to $250 ) with so many selections I just wanted to see what has been tested & works. I took so many recommendations when I set up my M&P 15/22 and this forum doesn't disappoint.

I have the Bushnell AR 223 with the bullet drop compensator illuminated reticle. Great optic for the price. I have it zeroed at 100 yards and haven't had a chance to use the reticle past 100 yards. I have a similar scope for my 15-22 and the reticle is dead I and don't expect anything different. The illuminated reticle works almost like a red dot as well. Bought it from Primary arms for $149.

Type of shooting ????

The type of shooting will help determine what type of optic might best serve the need. 1x red dot, low magnification 1-4x or higher magnification. For example a guy sitting on his duff at a bench trying to make small groups on paper will require a different optic than a guy shooting offhand at multiple steel targets needing fast target acquisition or general offhand plinking.

As you can see... there's already a recommendation for a 1-4x, 3-12x and no doubt someone will recommend a 1x red dot. I will. I use a 1x red dot for shooting from 50 to 200yds. So.... once you got the type of optic nailed down then recommending a specific optic will be easier.

All kidding aside, I go to the range usually with my handguns & a rifle or 2. Bring my son to make him comfortable with firearms. Hang for an hour or two. So mostly bench sitting and plinking targets.

Ok... so you're going to be mostly shooting from the bench and you earlier said you definitely wanted a fancy illuminated optic.

Based on that criteria... if you wanted something that was a bit more compact, "ARish" if you will, than a conventional belled scope you might consider the Primary Arms 1-6X Scope with Patented ACSS 5.56 Reticle. But if you're ok with a conventional scope you might consider something like Primary Arms 4-16X44mm Riflescope Illuminated Mil Dot Scope. Prices on these two are in line with your budget $150-$250. Now if you can live without at fancy illuminated reticle and a conventional scope is ok, the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9 x 40mm Rifle Scope P5 Dial Mil-Dot Reticle is on sale at Primary Arms for $269.

Generally, shooting from the bench at paper I think you'll be happier with at least 9x or above. There are a ton to choose from. Most named brands like Nikon and Bushnell will be fine.

I understand illuminated isn't ideal for the type shooting I do (Day Time) so I will Ck into the others. Compact is preferred

I run a Primary Arms 1X6 on one of my AR builds. One thing to remember is that most of these magnified scopes do not come with a mount so you are looking at add $50 to $200 for a mount. Don't skimp on the mount.

If you are mainly going to be bench shooting and the gun will not be used in a tactical role I would go with a fixed mount without throw levers because it will save you $$. If it will have a tactical use get throw levers so you can take the sight off in the field.

I run Nikon P223 3x9x40mm scopes on my AR-15's and I have been happy with them. My S&W M&P Sport II with the Nikon scope on it.

If you can, get a first focal plane scope, that way the reticule is correct at every magnification. The above mentioned 4-14 by Primary Arms is one of them.

Second focal plane scopes reticules tend to only correct at max power with maybe another magnification here or there in between if you can do the math.

SFP scope are more of a quick action scope for things like three gun, tactical closer combat stuff, and so on. Run it at 1X for quick acquisition and CQB shooting and run it up to max for longer distance, more precision like shooting.

Just to give you more info on my choice, I started with a Bushnell TRS25 red dot sight then later added a magnifier to get better accuracy. I didn't care much for the set up and bought a UTG bugbuster scope. I thought it was a pretty decent scope fore the $80. Had it zeroed at 100 yards and didn't have to make any adjustments after.

I'm not a trained sniper other than playing Call of Duty and the mil dots were too complicated to figure out so I started looking for scopes with a bullet drop compensator reticle to keep it simple.

I'm on Board with the whole Call Of Duty thing & as for the Bushnell Red Dot I installed that very Red Dot on my M&P 15/22 and I'm very satisfied. Not sure what direction I want to go with the Sport II, my son just told me if all I'm looking for is a 3 to 6 power why not Ck out a A-Cog or maybe a higher Quality Red Dot. So I need to do more research on this. Ugh

I moved the red dot to my AR pistol and for the distance I shoot the pistol the red dot works great it's set up to co-witness with my BIOS.

Right now you can get a Aimpoint Pro for $432 with 10 Magpul Pmags! For the money you cannot get a better red dot. Long batter life so it can be left on 24/7 for multiple years. It is rugged and will take a beating and a 2 moa dot so you can shoot it out to 300 yards if your eyes are up to it.

Nikon makes a 2-7x32mm scope that works great at the distances you are talking and it's under $200.

Given the OP's criteria of limited range, and largely recreational target shooting, as well as reasonable price, I'm thinking he might do well to look at some stuff that ISN'T of the uber-tactical-ninja variety, as there are a bunch of respectably solid options in that price range.
Just a regular (non tactical) scope in the 2-7X range, from any of a number of established companies would suffice perfectly well (for example, something like the Burris Fullfield II, or a Weaver, spring to mind).

That pretty much describes my practice. I use a 1x red dot. My rifle is designated for self defense so I use an Aimoint Micro. If the rifle was designated for recreation only I might use a Primary Arms Micro for a $100. Good reputation for recreational use.

With practice, 1-4X scope set on 1x is about as fast as a 1x red dot once you got it up and aligned with a good cheek weld and both eyes open. 1-4x is also a good choice if ya got a bit of an astigmatism and don't like the funky look of a smeared 1x red dot. Some guys simply can't stand it. The extra magnification can come in handy at distance when supported. If weight is a consideration the 1x red dot is typically less than half the weight of a 1-4x. For recreational use most any of the $200 1-4x scopes will do. Tons of reticles to choose from. Some of the more popular are etched reticles that can be illuminated and are designed for both close/fast as well as distance and more precise aiming. Next step up I'd look at something like a Leupold VX-R Patrol. Several different reticles to choose from. Some guys like the Trijicon TR24 with triangle reticle.

Forgot to mention....

There was a guy who posted he had ordered this one a few weeks ago. I haven't seen one yet but really like the chevron style reticle. Maybe he'll weigh in and tell us what he thinks.
