For Sport II, keep stock trigger or would you put a Geissele in?

All my AR's have Geissele triggers and that is almost a must have if you want to get good groups at 100 yards consistently. But for the first time I was planning on leaving my newly purchased Sport II stock. I reason it is an entry level AR, why spend much more than what it was designed to be? i already bought an $80 Magpul buttstock and a Magpul carbon length hand guard, I think it is ridiculous to spend another $165 on a Geissele

you are absolutely right about that! Compared to other triggers this is pretty decent but won't know for sure until i go out to the 100 yard range. if I slow fire where I take up the creep, then re-aim possibly that would shoot just as good as a Gissele
 
If you plan to use your Sport II to shoot groups at the range, a better trigger will absolutely help. But it sounds like you have other rifles for that. Leave the Sport what it is, a great home defense gun.

Excellent point! I probably will stick to the stock trigger. I also think it would have been nice if I could have gotten the midlength gas system as opposed to the stock carbon gas system. Been told less recoil and gun lasts longer. ALSo been told if you are going to use a midlength, you need to use a longer buffer tube.
 
A Mil-Spec AR15 is not meant to be a target rifle. It's a military / law enforcement defense weapon. For those applications, the stock trigger is just fine, especially if it's broke in a little.

You can easily get caught up in 'upgrade fever', and spend thousands of dollars in attempt to improve it, or maybe just draw attention to it. Everyone else is doing it, why not you?

Better yet, spend your money on ammo, training, and practice! Or just relax, and enjoy what you have.

So you have two ARs with Geissele triggers that you don't want to shoot, and are now wondering if it's worth it to install a Geissele trigger in the Sport you're buying that you will shoot? Hmmmm....

To the larger question about the Sport being worthy of installing an aftermarket trigger, the answer is yes.

From bench shooting to duty or recreational shooting, the right trigger for the type of shooting can make a tremendous difference in consistency of shooting which translates to accuracy, speed, and shooting enjoyment. The idea that only $2,000 guns are worthy of a $200 trigger isn't something I subscribe to.

Sounds like you've spent a lot of money on ARs to hold down the safe. Take the Geissele SSA out of the Bushmaster or Colt that you won't shoot and install it in the Sport that you will shoot.

Ammo is too expensive to burn up with a trigger that isn't exactly what I want. Plenty of things to compromise on, trigger isn't one of them.

Put it in, it is only money. I have 3 after market triggers in 3 of my 5 ARs and even though I don't shoot them often it is nice to have them when I do. I am no bench rest shooter but I can tell the difference in fit and finish and knowing I have quality parts is what I like. I have a Larue in my Colt 901 in .308 and a SSA-E Gieselle in my Colt 6601 and being a Texan I put a 2 stage CMC, Texas made, on my 6920. I know those triggers are way better than I will ever be but it is what makes this hobby great.....we can customize to our heart and budget. And you can always sell off the parts. Life is too short to sweat the details......take it from an old man.
 
Stocks, Grips and triggers are the best upgrades you can make on any AR15 IMHO. The stock and the grip go a long way to improving or customizing the ergonomics of the rifle to fit the shooter and the shooters purpose.

The trigger IMHO is the #1 upgrade you can make to a AR15. You could take a stock Sport II and swap out all the hardware, not trigger, and only see minor improvements in your groups and real world performance.

Swap the trigger out for a SSA, LaRue MBT-2S, Wilson etc... and leave everything else stock and you will see an improvement in you shooting. A good trigger makes all the difference. I have been buying the LaRue MBT-2S at $99 to $125 and for that price it is my go to trigger in all my ARs. I do have a Geissele SSA large pin in my Colt 6920 because it was made back in the large pin days. The MBT-2S is in between the SSA and SSA-E when I shoot them. I also like that they come with a heavier spring for those who prefer a heavier pull for defensive guns.

In the end $150-$160 for a trigger is nothing when you compare it to the cost of ammo. I mean 1000 rounds of decent brass cased ammo is going to cost you $300. If you actually shoot this rifle, unlike your other ones ;) , you will have shot the cost of a trigger in a range session or 2.

Once drop in that trigger and start shooting away the $150 will be quickly forgot. All that takes into account the assumption that you actually want to shoot this rifle. :D

The stock trigger on a Sport II like so many GI triggers on budget rifles are not consistent rifle to rifle. This is true of most mass produced guns rifles or pistols.

You can go to a large gun store and take 10 Sport II rifles straight out of their boxes and dry fire them and you will find that you will get a fair amount of variance in the weight, smoothness and overall feel of the trigger.

There is nothing special about the Sport II stock trigger that makes is any better than any other GI trigger IMHO. I could go into the parts bin and pull out a Colt or PSA trigger install it in a S&W rifle and you would never know the difference unless I told you I swapped the part. :eek:

Perhaps he's confusing a longer receiver extension tube with handguard. Be kinda tough to install a mid-length on a Sport and keep the plastic carbine handguard. :D

Are you asking if it's ridiculous or are you saying you've decided it is ridiculous?

It all depends on your objective. If your goal is inexpensive plinking then put the dough that would go into a trigger into more ammo. In my case I knew, no matter which AR I bought, I'd be dropping money on a better trigger. So I could buy an entry AR and add $200 for a trigger. Or I could buy a higher end AR and add $200 for a trigger. I opted for the former (entry AR + an upgraded trigger) because I didn't want the total expenditure to be more than that. I wanted something for semi-serious bench work - and the Sport (I) plus the Geissele meets my objective perfectly.

That may not be the right answer for you. That's answered by what you're trying to accomplish.

You can get a Geissele G2S for only a couple bucks over $100 in the regular sales that happen on Primary Arms. If you're not bothered about having a 2-stage, for single stage I think even on a sport it's worth investing in something like an ALG ACT. $50 + a $12 JP yellow spring + a $10 Joe bob set screw mod and you'll have a superbly short reset crisp 4lb single stage trigger.

There is another link somebody posted that has a special on a SSA and 10 Pmag 30 rounders for $215. I may seriously consider that, however, I do like the SSA-E better because it is combined 3.5lbs vs the SSA 4.5lbs which is still excellent as I have those in some of mine, but the others that have the SSA-E it's hard to go back to the G2S.

I've always been a little skeptical about sticking anything "new" into a weapon until I have had it (at the very least) halfway broken in. A little buff and pollish can go a long way and save quite a few $$$.

As we both well know. It can be a $500. or a $5000. weapon, Bottom line is it's the person behind the trigger that determines how well it will shoot. :)

What do you consider to be "good groups"?

I concur that if you buy an "entry level" rifle, you should probably leave it as is. If you don't, then you're going to spent $80 here, $165 there and before long you're going to have spent nearly what two rifles would have cost you and all you're going to have is a pretty "entry level" rifle and a box full of parts.
 
Nothing against the Geissele trigger. I have one in my M&P10 and they are a very good trigger. If you are just looking for a better feeling triggerl, you can get one for much less that a Geissele. Say and ALG as an example for around $40-$50. Many of the M&P AR triggers really aren't that bad and then again, some aren't. Luck of the draw. It really depends on what you want to do with the rifle. For my general purpose, slightly better than entry level AR, I'm probably going to go with an ALG and leave it at that. If I were to get a Sport, which I probably will at some point, I think I may just leave it stock and do a poor man's trigger job on it.
