I've used one of these from MTM the past few years...

The one the OP made, allows cleaning from the rear, which is the recommended end to clean the bore from. I have the same mag well insert, that I chuck up in a vise, on my work bench and use it to support my AR.

While perhaps not obvious, the one I posted above allows that as well, either in a hinged position or with the upper removed and laid across the forked uprights. You'll notice one is notched deeper than the other to create the applicable slope for drainage.

If I want to use it hinged, I just slide the plastic compartment lid over and use the link I received with my Dewey rod cleaning kit.

I have never cleaned my rifle in any other manner but from the breech to the muzzle.

I usually just put a receptacle over the muzzle end to catch CLP, solvent or patches. Works perfectly and makes cleanup a breeze.

Couple scraps of 2X, some 1X12(?) a few brackets and some paint and you have made yourself a helluva rig there, nice work.
MacGuyver would be proud.
I can't see it in the pics, but I just bet you have some sort of soft padding where the barrel rests.

I just hold my gun. This would probably be easier.
