AR Smith No Forward Assist
A friend of mine has a S&W AR carbine. The upper has a left hand hump but NO forward assist. Splintered A forge mark. Never seen one in this configuration before. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

That's the Sport I. The Sport II's all have the forward assist.

He should be fine with no forward assist. That can get someone in trouble if they happen to get the wrong ammo in the gun.

My Colt SP-1 from 1977 has neither the hump or the forward assist.......Not needed.

The forward assist is a solution in search of a problem,
FWIW, with the primer shortage of 2020/2021, I did load up some 223 with small pistol primers and lowered the bolt with the handle in an AR and the button to get it into battery, until someone brought up, the bolt is coming back in to battery on the second round isn't it?
