Default MP 15 Sport 2 brand new — Not in Battery

I just got a new Sport 2. The bold carrier group/bolt doesn’t seem to want to go into battery.

I took it to the indoor range where I bought it and it seemed right the first charge with a magazine. Then didn’t fire, cleared, reloaded checked forward assist, fired. Then 1 or 2 rounds and same no fire. Each time it seemed as though the bolt would not go fully into battery. I could get it with forward assist.

Had one of the gun shop guys take a look, we lubed it a little disassembled and reassembled, but same problem. They recommended I take it home and do a full disassembly and cleaning, I did.

If anything, the bold feels just a little tight in the carrier. Tried cycling the BCG with and without the little o-ring spring assist in the extractor. Didn’t see a real difference.

Back to try again at the range today. Exact same problem. Another guy at the shop took a look. We tried dropping the BCG in just on gravity in the upper and it just didn’t want to seat fully forward without help. We’ve gotten a total of about 15 rounds through it with only about 5 loading automatically.

Gun shop (major multi location retailer) thinks eithe the chamber or bolt is slightly out of spec.

Anyone got a suggestion? I used name brand 5.56 ammo (Federal) in the 5.56 rated rifle.

I plan to call S&W shortly.

Thanks

Did you check to make sure that the gas key and gas tube are lining up properly?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like it is feeding, but not fully chambering? Could be a parts fitment issue, could be a tight chamber, or out of spec ammo.

Does the rifle go into battery reliably when the bolt is closed on an empty chamber? When it fails to go into battery with a 5.56 round, can you pull back on the charging handle with normal force and eject the unfired round, or does it stick in the chamber? These two conditions I think would point to either a bad batch of ammo, or a tight chamber. Try another brand of 5.56 ball and see what happens.

If you keep on having issues, a pre-paid trip back to S&W may be in order.

Larry

Talked to customer service. It is on it's way back to S&W.

Didn't really want to go into battery with or without ammo.

As I was packing it up, I did happen to notice that the gas tube in the upper seemed like it was slightly off center or angled. Maybe that is the situation.

Since I barely got through 15-20 rounds in two 30 minute range attempts and it seemed tight even without ammo, we are guessing not ammo.

Just a little disappointed to wait another 4-6 weeks to play with my new toy ... ... ... errr ... ... ... operate my new equipment.

Good suggestion.

Friend had a gunshop install a Hogue free-float tube on his AR and it was rather inconsistent with my little sissy .223 reloads, (yes my friends trust my reloads) tried closing his BCG by hand on an empty chamber and immediately realized the gas tube was slightly out of alignment with the gas key.

Carefully bent the gas tube by hand until operation was smooth and the rifle functioned flawlessly with my ammo after that.

Sorry to hear you have to wait a bit more to play with your new toy...errr...operate your new equipment.
