This .22 Long Rifle conversion unit has paid for itself over and over again.
Even a dedicated .22LR upper would quickly pay for itself and be twice as accurate, but I mostly plink at plastic bottles in the woods 60 yards away so the conversion unit does just fine.

I suppose I could have titled this thread a little bit differently, so as to not sound rather misleading, but my point is that these conversion units and dedicated uppers turn your AR-15 into a fun little plinker at a fraction of the cost of .223/5.56.

After that .22LR shortage a while back, I stocked up on .22LR ammo and now I have a really cool rifle that shoots what is possibly the least expensive ammo out there.

Fun way to spend an afternoon in the woods with friends I must say.

I guess I just never looked into a .22 conversion kit for any of my ARs. I did buy a .22lr Advantage Arms conversion upper for the Glock 19. That's really fun to plink with. As for rifles, my Ruger American Rimfire bolt gun and the Ruger 10/22 carbine account for a lot of .22lr down range.

I have a red dot scope for .22LR and a LPVO scope for .223 at longer distances because both rounds have a different point of impact.
I also added quick disconnect scope mounts to both so changing them takes seconds.
Gee what ammo do I feel like shooting today?

Yea I had an Advantage Arms conversion upper for my G20 10mm a while back and I have another .22 rifle, but I might suggest you get one for your AR's.
They are just so much fun for such a small investment, especially the conversion units.

I see the CMMG conversion kits advertised frequently on various sites. It gets mixed reviews; some people swear by them and some are negative about the function. If you have a suggested brand, either post it here of send me a PM.

Yea that's the kit I got only it came with two magazines for a little less money.

Not satisfied with the way the magazines lock the bolt back on the last round or the increased hassle of loading ammo, (really not that bad) I got a BETTER-MAG adapter that allows me to use the S&W M&P 15-22 magazines which I much prefer.
Also got a plug for the buffer tube. (not necessary)

Now Rambo here has 110 rounds loaded up to suppress the plastic bottle onslaught! 😎

ETA: After a few hiccups when first used, which I attribute to a break-in period, this kit is running 100% now.

I had a CMMG 22 conversion bolt for a while, but ended up going with their dedicated upper. I've never had a single feed problem using CCI SV or subsonic ammo. It did break a firing pin once. Sent CMMG a picture of it, and in a week I had 2 new firing pins at no cost.

Yea at one time I had a CMMG dedicated upper, but I probably needed money, that's how I know that the one I had was about twice as accurate as this kit, but this kit is plenty accurate enough for my plinking purposes anyway.

I do have a CMMG bolt rehab kit on standby just in case, because I do plan on getting a lot of use out of this conversion unit.

I've got one of the CMMG Bravo kits and it works just fine.
I probably shoot more .22LR through my ARs than 5.56.

I definitively shoot more .22LR than .223 in my rifle.

I'll have a small pill bottle out there and maybe the first shot will go a little left, the second shot might go a little right...

Then I get frustrated and mag dump the other 23 rounds into it!

Get it every time that way, but that could get expensive with the center-fire stuff.

With the money I saved not buying a kit, and the recent $75 rebate, I bought a 15-22.

By packing I assume you mean walking around in the woods all day...........When I go to just shoot I may I may take 1/2 dozen. I drive to my spot. When hunting I always take 2......Long gun and Handgun.

Yes, I'm fortunate enough to live next to a forest, and because some people were illegally dumping garbage out there they closed down access and posted "no off-road vehicles" signs.

So me and my friends obey those signs and only hike to our favorite shooting spots on foot.

I also carry a handgun for bear/Bigfoot protection and my AR for plinking fun.

October 1st. and we're headed to the sticks for some plinking fun while the weather is still gorgeous out there!

Haven't tried my S&W 10 round magazine out yet but I'll bring 25 rounders as well just in case.

Should be FUN!

That does sound like a pretty good deal I may consider getting some more soon.

The way we plink is to put plastic bottles on the ground around 60 yards away and shoot the dirt just in front of them.
If we actually hit the bottles they barely move, but the shotgun blast from the dirt and debris smacking them will send them into the stratosphere!

That is why the conversion unit provides enough accuracy.
But we also do some informal paper punching out there so I want to see if I can get a bit tighter groups.

Putting together a CMMG type deticated upper with a CMMG .22LR barrel with the proper collar for the conversion unit.

ETA: I got the .22LR upper put together and am going to freeze my tail off testing it out today.
I have plenty of 5.56 but I have plenty more .22LR so the new upper will probably get much more use.
Sorry for the sideways picture but I forgot how to straighten them out so just turn your head sideways and it will be fine.

You're cruel!

I dressed warm and didn't even notice the cold.
The rifle was perfectly reliable and while not quite as accurate as a CZ 452 or something, it does group tighter than my conversion unit already.
I was using CCI Blazer but I still have about 4 or 5 other brands to try out.
Overall a great day, and seeing as how my gun range is about a quarter mile away from my house, I be right back out there again today for more testing.

I bought the CMMG kit and it was fun but if I shot Winchester or Remington ammo, the gun would get dirty after 75 rounds or so and start jamming. I think it did better with CCI ammo, but would still get dirty eventually and jam. My main issue was when I wanted to fire 223 ammo I had to go to the trouble to re zero the scope and just preferred using my dedicated 22 rifles for leaking with anyway.

I hear ya.

I was getting two different points of impact between 5.56 and .22LR in my rifle, so my solution was to use two different scopes.
The red dot for when I was using the conversion unit and the scope was adjusted for 5.56.
That was easy because I have quick disconnect mounts on both so changing them out took two seconds.

Right now I have the scope on the .22LR upper for accuracy testing, but will switch to the red dot when that is finished for just plinking around.

You need a metal AR lower to handle the 22 recoil?

Geeze about time somebody posted here, and the answer is yes.
Watched a YouTube video where a guy shot a group with a plastic lower and then hung a sandbag from the barrel and shot a second group.
The point of impact was noticeably lower for the second group.
Lesson: Don't be hanging sandbags from your barrel and you'll probably be fine.

That's not it at all. It's the weight of the person firing the gun. I have proof. I let my little grandson shoot it and the accuracy comes right back. Immediately!

I can see that but this rifle does double duty as an original 5.56, so I wanted to keep it all aluminum to come close to original weight and configuration.

Not really sure why but I like it a lot so far.

Oh yea, since I will be shooting mostly .22LR, (5.56 price increases etc.) I decided to swap in my favorite Areo Precision handguard to my dedicated .22 upper.

I'm liking it!

ETA: The upper receiver itself is also a Areo Precision and it fits my lower as tight as my original. (zero movement)
