Depends on the gun. You can get a lot of info by googling 5.56 vs .223. Be sure the decimal points are in the right places. :-)
If it's for a gun you already own, the manual will probably have that information also.

Check the barrel. It should be stamped with information such as the caliber and twist rate.
To my knowledge, all M&P15s are chambered for 5.56 NATO, but you can be such by checking the barrel stampings.
