It's called "Stippling" and yes it's done carefully with a soldering iron. It makes for a real aggressive texture for a solid grip with or without gloves.
Here are a couple others that I did:
Taurus 24/7
Moss 500

My Sigma, along with my M&P15 .22lr. I bought my Sigma in 2004, and it still works great. Just got my M&P on the 23rd of March.
Only thing I added to the Sigma was the Houge slip on grip, and bought more mags for it.

Mine looks just like all the other SW40VE stainless slide with Hogue grip, so no point in posting a pic... lol!

Wow.
Are there any law enforcement agencies lining up to get this kind of technology?
Does it come in Green light freq?
Can the laser be turned off without re-holstering it?
This is very interesting.

But what if you walk pass another magnetic field that is bigger than the one in your holster?

No idea. That's the way it came out of the box, so I guess it's an 'allied forces".

nitesite: Yes, We do sell to law enforcement with level 2 & 3 retensions.
I have green in the works, It requires a much larger format as the laser is bigger and the battery drain is greater. Just trying to keep it in a small lightweight/compact size.
Yes, there is a manual overide switch as well as the automatic one.
Marcus88 : It takes a extremely strong force like a electromagnet used for lifting to overide the switch. A strong enough one will shut it off, but at the same time all metal things are going to be drawn to it. Like the weapon itself.
They are also available in a navigational light combo in the same small size. They use 2 led lights to illuminate the threat but not disturb your night vision as bright lights do. They come in red , blue, & white.
Here is a picture.

My .40
Well I got a little brave. After checking out the other polished pics, I decided to give it a go and keep it subtle. I polished the barrel with 1500 grit sand paper and Rem Oil by hand and followed up with Mothers Polish and my dremel. I don't want to polish the whole slide. I wanted a little bling, but not too much (YET)!

A little braver yesterday. Polished the slide grips or ridges, whichever you prefer to call them. This is a cell pic, but you can tell they are polished. Both the chamber and ridges are mirror shiny. This thing is going to look sooooo much better next week when the Stingray laser arrives! Can't wait!

Looks beautiful!
I'm still to afraid to do that to my gun myself. I want to polish my barrel and now since my Sigma is no longer my main carry gun, I can do it.

It was easier than I thought. I bought a pack of $3 1500 grit sand paper and used rem oil on the surface I was sanding and it came out awesome in a few hours. I followed up with the dremel with a polishing wheel and soaked it with Mother's Plastic Polish and turned it all the way down to the slowest setting and polished as I sat and watched tv. Again, a mirror finish!

Here is mine, they always intrigued me, mainly because the internet gun snobs bach them so much. I did the pigtail spring trigger job. I shot about 500 rounds through it the other day without a hiccup and decent enough accuracy.

Wow - now I'm embarrassed to say I've never considered one of these. But I like the looks. I've got my SW 3913 (which is all I can afford right now - unemployed) but have been considering (i.e., daydreaming about)an M&P 9c (or 40c). Why have the Sigmas gotten a bad rap? Are there quality issues?

They truely are nice.
Some people do not like the trigger pull - it's long and very firm - kinda like a revolver being shot in double action (imho).
Very sleek and easy to conceal carry.

I have a sigma 40 and a M&P40c. Love both. The Sigma is just a little bigger than the 40c. I go to my concealed carry class this weekend and will be shooting the sigma because it is a lot less snappy. I'm ok with the 40c but until I get to shoot it a little more I'd rather just shoot the Sigma for the class.

Because early on Sigmas had some teething problems. But everything has been worked out with the newer models. Also, some folks can't handle the trigger....it's like a DA revolver. I think it it perfect for CCW.

Backon4, I'm considering both of these guns. I was leaning toward the m&p compact because of size. Your comment that the sigma is only a little bigger has me re-thinking. I could save $200 by getting the sigma. This will be a general purpose all around gun. Home defense, occasional carry, range. Since you have both in the real world what would you recommend? Its hard to hold both in a store and really judge. Also the m&p will have a 10lb trigger because of where I live, so no advantage their. I also can't have magazine's with more than 10 rounds; so this would be the same round count for each gun, so again, no advantage to either gun. Thanks in advance.

There are 2 real differences other than the obvious design differences. 1 is the size. Yes the compact is smaller but only by about a quarter inch in length and height. 2. Changeable back straps.
Granted my 40V is an older model and I'm not sure if the dimensions have changed any but, with the pinky extension on the 40c the difference in height is minimal (the thickness of the magazine base plate)
If the triggers will be nearly the same then I would save the money and buy the Sigma. The only reason I bought the compact M&P versus the full size was the beaver tail on the full size which I have heard many people say is uncomfortable for concealed carry. Also the M&P 40c is very snappy yet still manageable. However the sigma is an excellent shooter out of the box. The only complaint with the sigma has always been the long gritty trigger pull. However a pack of snap caps and a few hundred dry fires will alleviate the issue.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I think this thread should be made a sticky.
If not, it might drift away only to come back again in another thread. It has already worked itself way down the first page.
Let's see some more pictures!

New here and thought I would post a pic.
Wife wanted a pistol. Liked the Sigma SW40VE. Price after rebate was so good, we bought 2 of them. Just need more range time to get acclimated to them better.
