I replaced the standard M&P rear sight on my SD-9 with a Warren Tactical (plain) rear sight.

The concept behind the Warren Tactical (plain) sight is that it's design favors rapid target acquisition and sight alignment. This seems to fit the philosophy behind the SD and its self-defense trigger (SDT) -- this is not the easiest gun to shoot accurately at paper targets, given the long trigger pull, but it works well in the self-defense mode when deliberate and purposeful trigger strokes are being used to achieve reasonably good groups.

Rapid target acquisition fits with that intent, and the design of the Warren Tactical sight features a wide "U", all-black design with no distracting white dots, and rounded sort of top corners that allow you to see around the rear sight better than the standard sight. The idea is to pick up the front sight quickly -- here the S&W tritium front sight works very well with the Warren. As eyes age, it gets harder to see the front sight well, and this system seems to accentuate the front sight, or maybe just make it easier to concentrate on it.

I took the SD-9 to the range today and put 150 rounds through it (this SD continues to function flawlessly, and the trigger has gotten fairly smooth by virtue of a little polishing and a lot of dry-firing and shooting about 500 rounds so far). I think it improved my shooting a bit -- although it is always easy for a right hander to push a striker-fired pistol to the left a bit, and that didn't go away.

Overall, the Warren Tactical (plain) sight looks like a good investment to me (cost was ~$40). I will leave it on the SD-9 for now, although I might move it to an M&P later. Very easy to remove the old sight and install the Warren with just a small block of wood and a hammer to tap the old one out and the new one in.

More on this sight at http://www.warrentactical.com/products.htm (Full disclosure: I have no interest in or connection with Warren or any company selling gun parts!).
