Won't go in to why and how but I have a new tritium front sight I need to install. I saw posts before about this but can't find one now, and I need to know what it was yall used to knock the old sight off- and to bang the new one into place. Would someone please tell me the process? I'm no gunsmith but I should be able to do THIS. Thanks in advance.

Wow, that's a 3rd of what I paid for the pistol. I coulda sworn someone said use something soft- a dowel maybe- and tap the old one out, the new one in. I had sent this to S&W to have it done, but the CS was whacked out for some reason, and she sent me a new one. S&W was supposed to replace it while they had it. I was just looking at it, and there are teeny scratches on it- like S&W DID replace it-but with another dead sight. $130 for a one-use tool? Something else has to be acceptable...I hope.

Never mind. If it's ok to do this- the link shows the front sight I have. It slips into the dovetail- seems to me you use something soft, not a nail, maybe a dowel, and tap it out- then tap the new one in..?

If it's tight, then "tapping it out" vice using a sight pusher risks breaking the tritium vial. Check with a local gunsmith to see what he would charge to do it, or Call S&W back, and ask them to do it (again).
 
I've been looking all over, internet with different searches- and finally found the post I needed- it was under the M&P forum 'next door.' this seems to be the answer- this info, and a gunsmith. Really not happy with S&W, I asked them to install this while they had it, and they sent it back with either a NEW dead sight, or because the lame CS rep ( a woman) insisted on sending me one- and saying 'then you ship the pistol BACK and we'll install it for you.' I wrote them, told them not to send one, just to install a new one, and here I am. A new sight that works, a dead one on my SD, and trying to decide whether to send it back to S&W or not. Anybody have an idea what a gunsmith would charge?

"Yep, in S&W metal-framed pistols and the M&P pistol series are tapered and the sights go out left-to-right and back in right-to-left.

Not a steel punch, not for hammer blows ... a brass drift just small enough to fit in (and through) the dovetail cut. The pressure is focused against the side of the sight base, not the post itself (which will probably leave brass on the slide, if you drag or tip the drift, but which should wipe off with some regular solvent), because the power behind hammer blows can sometimes snap off a post.

While I used to use a 4 oz ball peen hammer and brass drift for sight work, I eventually started using a sight pusher when it came to night sights so I didn't damage the glass capsules. I was lucky that I never broke any night sights when I used to install them using a hammer & drift (and even had fit some sight bases themselves in older models), but I eventually decided to stop risking breakage of the night sights, which are expensive.

For installation I usually use a drop or two of oil in the dovetail cut and tap the sight base with a plastic mallet to start the sight base into the cut, making sure it enters evenly and straight. Then I switch to a drift and ball peen hammer or a sight pusher. Again, the drift (because of hammer blows) should be against the base of the sight and not on the post.

I had to move my front & rear sights in one of my M&P pistols, but I was able to do so using a sight pusher without undue effort.

If you've never had experience in properly removing & installing a sight in a slide's dovetail cut, you might consider asking for some help from a local smith. The cost of replacing a sight damaged by improper removal or installation, or risking potential damage to a slide (for whatever reason or circumstance that might occur) would seem to make some professional assistance prudent and cost-effective."

It's not hard to change the sight. It is NOT easy, though. It could cost you another sight or a slightly damaged dovetail slot. Either way, it's a pain if you are doing it the first time. If you are not going into the business, either have S&W try for the second time or just drop by a local smith and have them do the swap.

By the way, getting customer service to translate for you and notify the repair shop, communications are somewhat weak.
 
Thanks, talked to S&W a couple days ago and as usual they were very nice about it. Sending me a shipping label, only thing is don't know why they didn't just email it, it's what they did last time. I called em Monday and still don't have it. Not like it's a failure to function, so no big rush.
 
Got it back Thursday, didn't get to the range til today. I was pretty dead on with it before they replaced the front sight, I shot every round 2-4 inches left. Think I'll wait to adjust it, maybe shoot it again, who knows maybe I was having a bad day- although my Ruger was dead on. I think I read somewhere to get something solid, but soft, to keep from scratching the finish- like a wooden dowel maybe- that sound right?
 
If your sights need to be adjusted, move the REAR sight. Loosen the allen screw and tap the rear sight with a wooden dowel or brass punch.
 
Its bad the S&W even put this weaken cheap version of a night sight on the SD series. Its like 90% of SD owners have to send back their pistols to correct a problem that shouldn't exist to begin with.:mad:
 
I understand tritium goes bad at some point, but they haven't been MAKING them that long- seems a bit of quality-control would have caught that.

90%? I've heard of one or two, do you have a better source for your information?
 
I thought that was a bit exaggerated too. As many folks as we have on just this forum, I've only seen a few.
 
New question- I have a chance to get a laserlyte rear laser-sight- the one that you replace the rear sights with it- and the guy said it would fit an M&P, does that mean it would fit the SD? Big question I guess, are M&P and SD sights the same size/configuration?
