Try to rent or borrow both and see which you like better. It's kind of a Ford - Chevy thing. On the glock forum, I'm sure you'd hear glock is better. They seem in very similar classes to me. I personaly rented both before I bought my first gun and I liked the SD9 a lot more.
They are both well made top quailty guns. Either might need repairs or tweaking right out of the box, but both will probably be just fine.
Personal preferance is what it comes down to.

He hit it right on the head. There are people out there that think Glock is the end all, be all of the gun world and while they are great guns I don't look at my SD and wish it was a Glock. Not for a second.
So see if you can get you hands on both and make a personal preferance choice. My Sd is a champ with zero problems after at least 1000 rounds and twice as many dry fires. I'm sure you don't have to look for to find a Glock owner that will tell you the same thing.
Since you posted this on a S&W forum, I'm guessing you are looking to by an SD and want reassurances that you are buying a quality firearm which you are.

IMHO I would much rather have the SD9 over the Glock for a few reasons. First and foremost PRICE!! Secondly, you can get a bi-tone SD with a satin finish slide where as the glock is black on black and just looks like junk to me. The ergonomics of the SD (and all S&W pistols for that matter) feel much better in my hand. Smith and Wesson is 100% American made and that right there should sway you enough to buy red, white and blue. There are a few upsides to the glock, but if this is your first pistol, you wont even notice. I hope this helps, but like someone said before, you should definitely go to a range and check them both out. Happy Shooting!!

S&W VS Glock
In this commercial, think of the man on the screen as Glock, the audience as the gun consumers, and the runner as S&W!

The Glock 19 is one of the best 9mm pistols in the world. It has been in production for decades and deserves it's reputation. The SD9 is new and has not earned a reputation yet. This is a Smith and Wesson forum, there a shooters on here who think the Sigma is the best pistol ever made. Even I will not say that the SD9 is not a good pistol but the extra money you spend for the Glock 19 will be well worth it. You will get the money back if you ever need to sell it. SD9 is a good pistol the Glock 19 is a great pistol.

You must be one of the "Glock police" seen in the commercial I posted.

I truly hope the SD-9 proves to be a great pistol. I have heard some good reviews of it. I rate the M&Ps, XDs and Glocks in the same category.

Glock 19 vs Sigma & SD Pistols
I dislike Glocks intensely. They are ugly and unattractive and as has been said before they have "no soul".....but.....having said that the Glock 19 viewed objectively is one of the best, if not the best defensive pistol in the world. Its reliability is unsurpassed, its accuracy is acceptable, its size is ideal even with its generous magazine capacity and its comparatively light weight makes "carry" a breeze. Its use of a "minor" cartridge is a negative and it is UGLY! But, I have a model 19 and regardless of what I feed it, it always goes Bang. I do not like it, but I do respect it.

I agree to a point, the Glock has been proven over time the SD is new and unproven. Is that a bad thing well that depends on how you look at it. With the Glock you can walk into any gun store and buy mags for your gun there is also an endless supply of options for holsters and modifications to the Glock.
Personally I own an older Glock 23 it is a fine pistol without a doubt, I also own a Sigma. Does the Glock beat out the Sigma again that depends on how you look at it. I prefer to carry my Sigma chamber loaded while I carry my Glock chamber empty. The reason being is that the Glock pre-cocks the striker to a greater extent than the Sigma which gives you a lighter trigger pull but also gives you a greater chance for the gun to be discharged unwillingly.
The truth of the matter is that almost all poly striker fired semi-autos are just about the same, break them down and take a look. You pay more for the Glock yes but you also get more. A simple google search for aftermarket products for the Glock and SD will show just how much more is offered for the Glock.
If you were to compare just the guns themselves side by side I see no real difference between the two to claim that one is better than the other by any large margin.

Funny, I've been on this particular board since day one and have yet to read anyone say that the sigma is the greatest gun in the world; perhaps I missed it. I will admit though, that it's the greatest thing since peanut butter. LOL! j/k
I have always been an advocate for getting what you want when you make a purchase. I have never shot an SD, I have shot many Glocks and the sigma. Trigger and ergonomics are the big differences to me.
I think you will be happy with either the SD9 or the G19. The G19 has obviously been around longer and earned a great reputation. I wouldn't hesititate to get either.
Now, there is rumor in the air that the SD may go away, but I have no idea if that's true. I think the G19 will be around forever, it is a great gun.

If I had to pick between carrying a Sigma chambered or a Glock with an empty chamber, I would carry the Sigma.

I think the only way either would discharge is if you pulled the trigger.
