I have had a few issues with failure to feed and failure to fire. I have put about 200 rounds through it so far and have had about 20 jambs. I thought it might have been a mag issue but it is happening with both mags I have. Does anyone have advise on what I should do to fix the problem.

Might it be a less-than-solid grip on the weapon? I don't know that those guns are noted for problems due to "limp-wristing", but it can happen with most autoloaders.

Also, have you tried changing ammo?

What gun? What caliber? What ammo?

Clean/lube gun and clean mags.
Try something like Federal 180gr or 165gr.
If it won't fire that ammo, something is wrong with the gun. (back to S&W)
Is the gun new or used?

As stated I would first be sure I was gripping firmly...I know, I know but it has happened to me. By firm grip I really mean providing a firm wrist or "back stop" for it to recoil against. Not so common in a 40 but still needs to be eliminated as a cause. If that is not the problem then a phone call to Smith and back she goes...they will take good care of you.

Be aware that they just got back from summer shut down and are swamped right now. I called this morning to order a couple of parts and it was 30 minutes in line...plus they came back to a new computer system and they have to get used to that as well!

Let us know what you find out.:)

Well, here is my $.02 and exactly what you paid for it. Guns chambered in .40s&w can be finicky depending on the ammo being used and combined with the recoil spring. .40 is a high pressure round, and not all ammo is loaded the same. It could be that the recoil spring is too light or too heavy for that particular load, both can lead to feeding and ejecting issues.

Try different brands of ammo, as well as bullet weights and see. Guns do have personalities, some like certain ammo types and weights more than others, some don't care and will feed and eat anything.

Try a name brand box and see how it goes.I have close to 1000 rounds of ball and hp's in both 180/165 through mine with 0 issues.I prefer Federal 165 shoots great and it's pretty clean. These gun's are very reliable in general, try again with some Federal.Good luck

Can you describe the failure-to-feed issues? Is the round stuck with the nose down? Is the nose of the round partly in the chamber? Did the slide close completely but missed putting a round in the chamber? Pictures would be very helpful.

New member, same issue. Mine (SD40VE, new-3 months old) has ~ 300 rounds through it with no problems. Federal only, 180 gr. FMJ.
HP only loaded for HD-never fired.
Last trip to the range, fired once and stovepiped. Ejected mag and cleared round-appeared to be partially in the chamber, nose up.
Re-inserted magazine, racked the slide and-jam.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Never fired the pistol again, rounds would apparently get stuck under the ejector-wouldn't slide under it.
Changed ammo and magazine to Fiocci 170 gr. FMJ.
Repeat. Jam.
Cleared the pistol, cleared both magazines and sent back to S&W for repair.
Purchased S&W M&P Shield40 for the interim.
Opinions?

Max, remember that S&W took a "vacation" for two weeks (computer upgrades and the like) so the 23 days is probably part of that. I would have suggested looking at the extractor, taking it out looking for burrs and cleaning the cavity, etc. Beside what has been stated above and in other recent threads I would look to polish the feed ramp. Since it worked great for 300 rounds, something must have "changed" I am thinking crud in the extractor cavity or burr on end of the extractor itself.

Interesting-my late father was a Navy diver too. '44-'78.
Thanks for the reply, sir. It seems (FTF) to be a 1% issue with the SD's and maybe the Shield, too. I'm a member (representing my wife and son) of both the Glock and Sig forums. No complaints of this type over there.
The pistol is, as you saw, in Mass. for work and I have no choice but to accept whatever work they deem needed or warranted. I'm a clean freak and the pistol is always cleaned and sparingly lubed. I use Hoppe's No. 9, LSA for the slide contact points and Frog for everything else. Modifying a weapon to make it work makes me a bit...put off, should I say? If S&W gets enough of these back, for the same issue and must make the same mods to make them work, it brings into question the engineering/testing before manufacture/distribution.
I wait with bated breath to see what magic they hath wrought!

Thanks again, Max

I think Smith did their homework on the sd,I have one and have buddies with them aswell. My local shop get's one and it's gone within a day, selling like hot cakes. This shop has atleast sold 20 of these 40's recently and none have had issues.I have seen alot of these at the range and all work like there designed to do.I would bet that the return rate is low on these,I haven't seen one have a issue period at various ranges.I'm sure Smith will resolve your problem and get you back in action.Everybody makes a dud once in a while some more than others.Good luck.

I finally received my SD40 from S&W Repair. The WO states they "Replaced BBL".

Replaced the barrel? And no explanation? It seems to feed fine and eject properly, but the ballistics/fired casing provided with the pistol when new, and the sample bullet on file are no longer matched to this frame S/N.

Weird...

I tryed everyones advise with better grade ammo and weight. Still had the same issues. Called warranty repair and they are sending me a label to send back. Maxchichon how long did they have it for?

Next time you guys shoot make sure your thumb is nowhere near the slide lock lever. It may not be what happening to you but I found it was happening to me.
With a thumbs forward grip during recoil my strong hand thumb made just enough contact with the lever to lock the slide open. I modified my grip and now I do not have this issue.
