I would get a set of tractiongrips.com grips or talon grips first, as
they greatly improve feel and are easily removed if you change your mind someday.
To your question, I assume you are planning on using a soldering iron? If you've never stippled anything before, I suggest doing an inexpensive knife with nylon/polymer handle, such as a Victorinox paring knife or the like.
That being said, go slow but not slow enough to burn the material and most importantly don't go too deep.
Also, I prefer to use the pointed tip for a 'dot' pattern as opposed to wavy lines, etc. Hope this helps.

Stippling
I'd try some skateboard tape in strategic places. Works good and you can take it off if you decide you want it back to stock.

I think the hardest part is having to hold the soldering iron so far from the tip, which gives the user less control and exaggerates any shakiness in the hand.
BTW, if you don't want to go out a buy a knife, you probably have something you can try it on. PMags, screwdriver handles, etc. Probably the most helpful stippling I did was on a small screwdriver that I use for adjusting sprinkler heads.

I wouldn't do it just for looks. Why hurt the value just for cosmetics.

plus if it were to get messed up theres no way to get a new frame as of yet...go with the stick ons or slide on grips, an uncle mikes slip on is great for 10 dollars at walmart
