Default Problems with my SD9VE

I'm a new member and this is my first post, so I hope I get a warm reception. I bought a SD9VE on March 1, 2014 after reading about it for months. $325 at a gun show. Have had a couple malfunctions like double feeds and such. But only when the magazine is holding a full 16 rounds. But I'm not as concerned with that as I am with the fact that my mag drops out of my gun whenever I attempt to rapid fire. Anyone have this problem also? Any thoughts and advice would help

this is a new one for me. i would ensure the mag is catching on the release lever. if its not "snapping" into place. also try loading just 15 and see if it snaps in. my GF has a mag in her 9mm thats not a sd that wont snap in if loaded to capacity. we just down load one round. worse case if its a new one and not "used" it should be able to be sent in for warranty. was it a ffl sale or a private sale? if the guy who sold it had registered it, it may not be under warranty anymore...

I can't get my mag all the way in my 40 or my gf's 9 when the mag is full unless I keep the slide open.
I've tried to pipe a round, drop the mag and load another....no go.
Put 16 in the mag, lock the slide open, and load the mag.
Rack the slide (I'm not a fan of just pressing down the lock release)

See locking the slide open and then inserting a full mag helps.

Welcome to the forum!

The mag springs are pretty stout when new, and I load new magazines to capacity and let them sit for a week or so before I use them. I also clean and then lock the slide open for the same period of time.

You didn't say if you were trying to load the magazines with 16 rounds into the gun with the slide closed, but if so, that's pretty much a common issue with a new gun/new magazines. Try loading the magazine into the gun with the slide open, or download it a round or two on a closed slide.

I'm not sure what could be causing the mag(s) to drop out on rapid fire, but the standard checks would be:

1) Are you hitting the mag release button with your thumb/finger(s) as your grip shifts under rapid fire?

2) Do both/all mags drop out under rapid fire?

3) As previously mentioned, do the mags drop out under rapid fire when downloaded (i.e., 15 rounds or less)?

It may simply be a matter of checking your grip. If only one magazine drops out, then it may be a problem with that magazine. If it happens with both/all mags, your gun/mags may just need a little "break in" time. Are you an experienced shooter, or is this your first semi-auto?

Good luck, and I hope you find a solution. Be sure to clean and lube your pistol...may not be the problem, but it can't hurt.

I shoot with only 14 in the mag. It has happened with both mags. I bought it brand new at a gun show in Doswell, VA. When I shoot I usually load the mag into the gun with the slide closed and rack it myself. Although on occasion I do load it with the slide open then just hit the slide release. Either way the mag falls out during rapid fire after about 3 shots. If I just shoot at a normal pace I don't have any problems. Only during rapid fire will the mag drop out. I don't believe its my grip, tested that by shooting with my thumbs lower than I usually hold them on the grip. And I've previously owned two semi auto pistols. And thanks for the warm welcome guys

And yeah it seems to snap in perfectly fine. I still it has something to do with the magazine catch though

Time for a call to Smith & Wesson.
It is probably something simple...so the choice is yours.
Fix it yourself...or take something that is under warranty, be without your weapon for a couple of weeks to let them fix it.

The right answer for you is the right answer for you...

If you can find out what is wrong, it's possible S&W will mail you parts, FOC.
They mailed me a few parts when I called on mine.

Welcome to the forum!

I think this needs to be shot some more, things will get better.

The mag should be inserted with authority (not slamming it though).

This is your best bet. Something like the mag dropping while firing is not something that can just wear in like feeding issues.

I don't have much to add , just wanted to say hi & welcome.
I've had my SD9ve for 2 years now & shoot it a lot. I did find a sigma mag for sale, they said it was the same but I can tell when I am loading it with out looking. It does not seem to seat as easily as the 2 that came with the gun. I have tried run both 16 & 15 with slide open or not & have also tried something I heard of on here, to slam the mag in & that ( i guess ) jars the slide & loads the new round. I don't do it a lot, but you never know when you would want to just drop a the empty & be ready fire with one move.
Only said all that to say I have never had a mag fall out.
Good luck & let us in on what S&W has to say

Have another experience shooter "rapid fire" you gun.

If mags drop then you may have a problem.

If not then it's "pilot error" and you "are" hitting the mag release.

didnt notice are you left handed? working the trigger hard may be causing your trigger finger to get tight on the release...

People where saying I was limp wrist it, I tried several different ways to fire it and I am not a small guy and know how to shoot a handgun. I sent it back has been there for just about 2 weeks not sure how much longer it will be until I receive it back. I hope upon return it fires like it should.

if you load in a mag empty with the slide open. and then leave the slide open and push on the top of the mag through the slide will the mag stay in or pop out? I had this problem with mine but it was after i ran several boxes of ammo in a very gritty environment. when i would push the mag release it felt gritty. so i cleaned and lube it it worked fine. the other thing to see is if the catch is closing all the way when a mag is inserted. on the right side of the handle opposite of the release button you will see a cut out where the release come through when pressed. If this does not return flush to the handle then you mag catch is not fully engaged. I have seen 2 that the cut out was to tight and would cause the release to bind.
