carrying extra mags
I've been debating carrying extra mags and doing research on the subject. Came across this thought I'd share Why one cop carries 145 rounds of ammo on the job

An LEO is trained to respond to and confront danger. We on the other hand are taught to avoid conflict whenever possible.
Don't know where you reside and what restrictions you might have.Personally I'd rather carry a handgun with as much capacity as possible and a few mags than a lesser handgun and twice as many mags.

As the founder of the Church of Devout Cowardice, lighter is better. Drawing my firearm is truly a measure of last resort. It's a good thing that statistically we'll never have to worry about having to confront violence. That said, perhaps you'd want something that carries more rounds?

Situational Awareness.
Avoiding trouble is much better than a shoot out anyday.

If you are going to take the trouble to carry a firearm you should also carry at least one spare reload with you. the size and weight are insignificant but the potential upside could be tremendous. You probably won't need it, but if you need the gun the odds have already gone against you, so........

If you can't get it done with what's in your handgun in a sd situation, you have bigger problems than those you can solve with more ammo.
I've hunted birds and large game for 50+ years.
I can't remember hitting anything with my third (fourth or fifth shot).
I've seen lots of folks carrying guns with 5 shots.
They all seem to think that the first few are just a warm up for the extra ammo they lug around.
Then they miss with the rest.
I use double shotguns exclusively and have for many years.
If I don't hit with the first or second, I'm not going to hit with a third, fourth or fifth.
Translating field experience to sd situations, I figure that I need to get things done with what's in the gun.
SD situations aren't TV or movies.
Learn to hit quickly with power, accurately.
Don't imagine that carting around large capacity handguns and/or lots of exta ammo solves any problem a civilian is likely to encounter.
Learn to quickly hit the threat with adequate power.
Col. Cooper's motto: DVC is a good guideline.
Leave the extra ammo on the range.
Just my opinion, of course.

When I carry my SD9VE around town, with 16 + 1 on board, I don't think I will need any more ammo...if I do, I'd be in more trouble than I could handle anyway. When we travel, though, I do put a couple of spare mags in the console.

You have never heard of anyone saying they wish they brought less ammo.
I always carry at least one spare mag

If I am forced to employ my hand gun, I want to at least be able to reload after the fact.

I believe that any one carrying a mag fed weapon should carry at least one spare. I have had a Sigma mag take a **** on me, driving in my vehicle, base plate let go, bullets falling on the carpet. No I do not know where or how I cracked the base plate, but it let loose. I always carry 2 spare mags, same as I do for my rifle while hunting. This rifle and it's twin were taken on a MT bear hunt, rifles zeroed , mags checked, fired just as I had done with this gun since 1975, Never a failure. Got to MT 2010 and had 2, Rem 760 mags start failing to feed, dumped them, pulled 2 more out of case and checked zero and no further problems. The gun was new in 1975, it gets minimal use compared to an average handgun, 30-50 rd/year, and the mags I checked before leaving had a problem. Could I still hunt? yes, 1 shot is all I have ever used on a black bear, but it could and has happened to me. If you have a "mag safety", you now have a club. Will it happen at a "bad" time? Unlikely statistically, carry an empty mag if you fear the "rambo" connotation, you can reload it and go about your day. Better yet only carry a gun on the day/night when you will need it!! Be Safe,

You bring up an excellent point! A semi automatic firearm is only as good as the magazine that feeds it. it is always a good idea to have a spare or two in case the one in the gun goes belly up as Murphy's law has a bad habit of showing up at the worst times.

lately this city is has had a thing where several people approach from different directions. One guy approaches from the right as you're loading your car while another one or two come from the other side or even from the other side of your car. Another interesting thing they started doing in the suburbs that border the city is to throw spikes out as a car passed. Done at night. As you pull over they suddenly approach from nowhere usually asking you if you need help while they are still far away. If you say no they keep coming and act like they can't hear you.
I don't care what you and Col. Cooper do in hunting but last time I checked animals don't shoot back. If you think you have enough that great but don't be surprised if the perp or perps have double and triple the amount you do.

How do his original carry of 47 rounds add up, seems an odd number.

Magazines are normally to blame when a pistol malfunctions, so having a spare is not a bad idea and if you need the extra ammo it wont hurt to have it. A magazine weighs about 10oz fully loaded (depending on which pistol it's for). It's not going to drag you down that much.
rweeks, that's a good one!
