Default slide wont come off

i just got the sd9ve and have put close to 100 rounds through it and go to clean it and the slide wont come off. ive pulled both of the tabs down but the slide will only move like a quarter of an inch forward and stop. I sat and tried for close to an hour and i have no idea whats going on

First make sure it is unloaded and the magazine is out, it won't come off with a magazine in the gun. Now pull back on the slide about a 1/4 inch at the same time have the slide release tabs pulled down and pull the trigger and push the slide forward. It should come right off.

Yes pull the trigger to release the slide. You have to remember to have the slide pulled back with both tabs pulled all the way down simultaneously, then pull the trigger as well. And keep those tabs pulled down through the whole process.

Your welcome. Its easy once you do it a few times. Seems a little tricky at first though. Just always make sure the gun is unloaded and no magazine is in the gun or a accidental firing can occur very easily.

I have been having a somewhat similar issue, but I realized that my pistol wouldn't dry fire at all.... so it wouldn't release the slide.

after trying for a while I put an empty mag back in and I could get it to dry fire then dropped out the mag and everything else worked like it was supposed to to pull the slide.

I'm sure this isn't the right way, but its the only way I could get it to dry fire.

anyone else had this issue? its a new 9ve with only about 50 rounds through it.

Does yours have a magazine disconnect?

You must have a California or similar version-Does is also have a pop-up "Loaded" indicator on the top of the slide?

yup, I am in Ca.

Yes it does have the raised indicator when one is in the chamber.

Not sure what the mag disconnect is though.

If you have the manual to your SD9VE, look on page 26. There you will find the instructions on how to disassemble a SD9VE/SD40VE with a magazine disconnect safety like your gun has properly. I'm sure you can find the pdf version of the manual online possibly S&W website

I find with my Glocks, and the Sigma I once owned, that instead of pulling back on the slide, its easier to press forward with the top edge of the bbl side of the slide snug against the edge of a counter or table at about a 60* angle.

If you look through the magazine channel with the slide off you will see a lever that intrudes into that area. It is pushed up when the magazine is in place. If you want to dry fire the gun you will have to have a magazine in place.

If you want to simply examine the sear action you can push the lever down with a soft pen or other item and it will allow the trigger to move the sear.

There are very good instructions in the manual. I bought the CA version even though it is not required in my state because of the added safety features. I also bought a couple of 16 round magazines to speed things up at the range.

For future reference, S&W has come up with a groundbreaking innovation that addresses your problem specifically -- the owner's manual:

I previously wrote:

That was out of context. I was thinking of how to observe the trigger bar and sear action with the slide off in the CA model.

In order to do that, just for analysis, (or curiosity) you should have the magazine out and the magazine disconnect lever up. You can push it up with a soft probe or pencil eraser end.

You will also know, from reading the owners manual, you need to push that lever down before removing the slide. [I have not been able to find out why that makes a difference, and queries to S&W come back with "It won't hurt the gun if you don't do that."]

I bought a slide stop bar that is, surprisingly, only 1 mm longer. Laser cut. Makes an incredible difference.

amazon or ebay, I bought mine off ebay as shipping was free. What a difference it makes! Easy to install just remember to keep a little tension on the spring so it doesn't go flying out like it did for me! Highly recommend

NDZ Performance makes absolutely the best one.

203-439-7787 and [email protected].

Extended Slide Lock Lever Stainless Steel.

It's still the same shape as the factory model but that 1 mm made an incredible difference in take down. No more rags, no more bruised fingers, etc.

Precision laser cut, very high quality.

I should mention that it comes in black or stainless. I picked stainless and it looks great and works even better than one would think. Just one mm longer!
