SD40 VE - Missing pin above beaver tail
Today, after cleaning my SD40, I noticed the small plastic pin above the beaver tail was missing. Is this necessary to have in place before firing? Without it, the slide seems to drift upwards. I've attached a pic to this post. I am new to handguns, so any help on where to find this replacement part would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and God Bless

Look closely again. It should be a hollow tension pin. If you take the slide off and can pry up the striker block, it's missing. If it's actually missing, call S&W immediately to have your pistol taken care of.

Matt

It is steel not plastic and in the pic it's definitely missing.

In case nobody has said it to you, hold off on firing that gun till the pin is in place. It would be very unlikely, but it is at least possible that the polymer could be damaged by firing it with a single pin holding things together.

Darn, you made me go look at mine. Wonder if it was ever there and missed when it was assembled?

I've noticed some of the SD/SDVE series have a coil pin very similar to the M&P. My SD40VE has a solid metal pin that to me has always been questionable. I would replace it with a coil pin that expands outward to maintain a tight fight, rather than the solid pin that uses friction to stay in place. I will try to find a coil pin tonight that fits.

The pin on mine is smooth with some knurling on one end. I'm not a fan of it, but will soon replace it with a coil pin.

Mine is solid. I assume it's metal but haven't given it a scratch test.
I have the CA version so the pin has some extra parts and springs on it.

Absolutely necessary. Strongly recommend the gun not be shot until the pin is replaced.
Yours may have been missed during assembly, or "walked out" while the gun was being fired. It was a good catch to notice yours was missing and take action to fix the problem.
Call S&W and they will send you one for free!
