I've got an all-black SD9 from the original production run -- I like it a lot. The SD9VE that has been sold the last couple of years is a great pistol too, and some people prefer its two-tone looks, but I like the appearance of the original SD9 and the new variant sold by Academy. I could fault the SD9VE (and SD40VE) for their plastic rear sight, but that is something S&W did to cut costs -- and their history with plastic sights goes all the way back to the "Value Line" 3rd Gen pistols of the 1990's.
Fiber-optic sights on your new SD9 are easier to see than many other types of sights -- and that adds value to the pistol. I'm going to stick with my original "contrast" (white dot) metal sights because I think they are a little more robust, which is in keeping with my idea of a SD gun (but it is worth noting the fiber optic sights will still give you a sight picture if the plastic tubes happen to get broken).
There is no doubt, the SD9 you bought is a great package and very appealing. By selling it exclusively through one retail outlet, S&W (and Academy) seems to be able to keep the price about 10% higher than a "standard" SD9VE.

S&W Rover, very good response.
S&W has come a long way with the current SD9 VS the older SD9. We stripped both down beyond the basic field strip last night. You can see where S&W has paid a little more attention to machining of some of the new SD9's moving parts. They have polished a lot of the trigger parts, making the current SD9's trigger very crisp and tight.
Other than the HI-VIZ sights, the black slide, and the trigger pull, the SD9 and SD9VE are the same gun. I have been wanting a newer SD9 for so long now. When I saw the price drop, I knew I had better respond VERY QUICKLY! I like my 2 year old SD9VE very much. But, I like my new SD9 A LOT MORE!
Academy is currently selling the SD9VE for $299.99. For an extra $20 ($329.99) you can get the newer & updated SD9. It has HI-VIZ sights, a better trigger (6.8 lbs. VS 8+ lb), and, IMHO, the SD9 just looks more INTIMIDATING! I think that's A LOT more gun for an extra $20! But, you better get in there QUICK! They are selling out fast!
