Thoughts on the SW40F, pros, cons, overall?

I have had mine since they came out in the early 1990s I won't tell you how much they went for when they first came out 
It is a good, durable, reliable duty style firearm that holds 15 rounds of ammunition.
It is not a target gun, it does nor does it have a great trigger, there are not hundreds of accessories or mods that you can do to customize the pistol, it is just a good base firearm
That said I do own several of them. . . . Two in 40 S&W, 2 in 357 SIG and one in 9MM

I have a later version of the Sigma, a SW9VE. As someone said they aren't target pistols, but they are dependable and will get the job done. The triggers aren't that bad and you can do some very simple things to improve them.

I had a SW9F and a SW40F, back a few years ago. I found both to be very reliable and reasonably accurate. Most of the misses were my fault, not the guns.
I liked the longer barrel, 4.5" seemed to help accuracy. I traded them off when others convinced me I needed whatever it was that was new and cool at the time. I rarely see any for sale now and when I do, it's at a gun show and the pistol is priced high enough to buy two SD's.
I think I have read that S&W does not support them any longer and parts are hard to come by. Please correct me if I am wrong on that. I did read once that S&W would offer a SWVE model to replace it, but I don't know if they would do that with the SDVE's.

I have had mine for years. Bought it in '96 or so. Ran a lot of rounds through it over the years. Always been solid and reliable. Now that I think about it, I sure would like to find a threaded barrel for it, so I can use my suppressor.

Folks claim that the First Gen Sigmas were unreliable or prone to parts breakage, but so far every single person I've ever seen who actually own one has nothing but positive things to say about them.
Furthermore, public opinion of the Smith & Wesson brand was decidedly low at the time due to the company's cooperation with the Assault Weapons Ban, ergo I have a suspicion that many of such reports were exaggerated at best, outright indignant slander at worst.
I own a 3rd Generation Sigma SW40VE which I got for $199 LNIB last year, and it has become my primary EDC. It's lightweight, conceals well in an IWB Holster, and has excellent ergonomics.

I got me just pre AWB in 1994. Really great ergonomics with a tough trigger pull. Have never had any problems with mine.

Made in USA S&W that gets a lot of trash talk, unjustified. I have a SW40VE from a deceased family member that's had less than 50 rounds through it. They handle and point well. Did a few upgrades (sights, Talon Grips, outer sear spring upgrade) and will have it at its max after the Boudica trigger and trigger spring kit arrives and gets installed. There are a few threads here in this section you might want to take a peek at.
WHY S&W didn't mold-in a proper rail mount in the frame is beyond me as the square sigma front-end to my eyes is butt-ugly that only gets worse when I install the picatinny bracket for it; but for free I'll overlook it, just having the modest price of a few upgrades and extra mags invested into it.

I still own my 40F, still runs great. Mine is from the first 500 made and was first used in the 1994 S&W Invitational at Fulton NY. I purchased it from the match. I had a second slide outfitted with adjustable LPA rear sight (Bo-Mar Clone) I then shot it in USPSA matches (Major PF Loads 175) for about 2 years in Limited class. Lost track of how many rounds down range, but it was most likely over 25K. Once you master the trigger, it is pretty accurate. Coming from the DA Revolver world, it was not much different. Still have it, still shoot some IDPA with it.

spend the extra $ and get an M&P you will not regret it.
