So I was perusing the LGS yesterday, and came across what I think is a NIB unfired SW9F. She's got the original case and one 10 round magazine, and also appeared to have all the original documentation with her as well. The reason I think she's unfired is that she's spotless. No marks on the white mag follower to indicate that she's had ammo inserted and not a single speck of fouling inside or out, she is meticulously clean. The only marks on her seem to be some light finish abrasions, I think from where the slide sits in the case on the plastic standoffs, but that's it. My suspicion is that she was purchased around the time of the Glock lawsuit by somebody banking on the series to be discontinued and value to someday climbing as a collector's piece, but here we are 27 years later, and they really haven't done well in that respect. The LGS for example has it priced at $250.

So, all that said, I put it on layaway because I'm extremely tempted to add it to my collection, and I of course have every intention of shooting it too. I've never owned a SW9F before, in fact, not sure I've ever seen one for sale before either, just the SD9VE mostly, which I have shot and didn't particularly like that much. On the other hand, the one I've shot belonged to a buddy of mine and had something wrong with it, it could not shoot remotely straight at any distance, so that's tainted my opinion on the series a little.

I have no obligation to buy the SW9F, and I could put the layaway credit towards something else if I so choose. The question for the group here is: Do I buy it as a curiousity mostly because these days an original SW9F is a bit of an unusual find, and I like unsusal guns, or do I let it pass by in lieu of something else because there's a reason the model only lasted 3 years in production?

I have owned one in 9mm and the similar .357 Sig

Those are decent guns though the triggers leave a lot to be desired. Trigger kits help them but the difference is simply acceptable, not outstanding by any means. Before the pandemic used .40 S&W Sigmas could be found here for $150.00-$185.00, so the price of your gun seems about right. Perhaps a little light.

As my kids would say, meh.......I would take it for a glove box gun for 200 .....if it had two mags. Finding a second mag is gonna push the money you'd have into it way more than it's worth. Just in my opinion, which is worth every penny you paid for it😊

Are you prepared for a long, hard trigger that no kit is going to cure? I used Sigmas as trainers/loaners for 20 years because they were cheap and reliable in stock form, but I called the triggers Algebra Problem: LONG AND HARD.
Like shooting a revolver double action. Master a Sigma trigger, and an M&P trigger will feel fabulous.

Perhaps I should clarify: I'm not looking to buy this for any practical reason, I just want it for it's unusualness really... I like unusual and old, out of production guns. Some are good, some aren't, I just feel like I need to try out stuff that most people wouldn't. Just short of you guys telling me it might disintegrate while I shoot it, or it will be so bad functionally that it's not worth a box ammo to put through it, I'm not all that dissuaded. I don't see anything so far that screams major red flags for what would be for me a curiousity.

Really the only person you need to convince is you. I think you've made your decision! If the gun appeals to you, speaks to you, you like it, you like the price and you want it then go ahead and get it. From how you described the gun, it sounds like you're not going to find a nicer SW9F. Buy it and enjoy it!

Buy it, enjoy it, the only complaint I would have would be the trigger, but I have found they get better with use. Think DA Revolver when you shoot it.

If it blows your skirt up, get it. Play with it, run a bunch of ammo thru it. If it works reliably, throw it in your trunk with a box of ammo for a TEOTWAWKI gun....

I say buy it.

I bought a used 3rd Gen Sigma SW40VE back in 2019 for $199 and it was worth every penny to me. (Still serves as my Winter Carry Gun) For the rarer 1st Gen Sigma SW9F in near mint condition, $250 sounds like a steal. (I saw one go for the same price in beater condition last year.)

Its the ultimate truck gun. I bought one in .40 a few years ago at a police supply place because it was cheap, it was a Smith and Wesson, and I had a good stash of .40 ammo.

For anyone concerned about a light trigger pull on a striker fired gun with no manual safety - this gun is for you! The trigger is akin to a staple gun.

It was relentlessly reliable, though. One of my kids glommed it, but I’d definitely buy another.

I too say buy it & don't be afraid to abuse it

I bought the SD9 FDE for the same reason & haven't gotten out to shoot it YET, It's Cold Outside, I loaded one MAGAzine & bought a 3rd just because.
Got a Holster coming that should fit it & my Glock 19X :D
It's a Stocking Stuffer
Wife is in the living room watching Christmas shows & has the Holiday Music Going

Everyone Be Careful as this is the time of year when a lot of things happen out there

Be sure to Carry when you go to the Grocery Store & whenever you step out, It could save you or someone else

Your a Foul One Mr. Grinch :D

A few years ago I found its long-lost sister, a new or nearly-new SW40F with box, 2 mags, etc... for $185. I bought it because it was a S&W, it was cheap and a private sale.
And I found out it is also a nice, comfortable, quite accurate shooter. In other words, "no ragrets".

@mainegrw did you purchase the SW9F?
It's been a month
Or did something else grab you
Just wondered as the thread just got Bumped back to the top
BTW My NEW SD9 FDE cost $285

Ultimately, I decided to pass. The more I thought about it, the more I really didn't want it. Picking up a Beretta PX4 Storm instead, haven't owned one of those yet, and I feel like I'd enjoy shooting it more.

The Storm is a great gun. My PX4 subcompact is definitely much nicer than my Sigma, but then it cost a lot more, too.

How are the grip pads holding up? You said you were going to add some items to the FDE at the beginning of the year. Anything yet?
Did you ever add a wider slide takedown bar?

I agree with most. If you like it buy it. Don't buy it because it's the model that got in a fight with Glock not for the assumed originality. Remember, few quibble about the quality/bang-for-buck quotient with this gun. I have the SD9 VE and keeping pricepoint in mind will gladly run down its shortcomings here for ya. Trigger There ya go. I own 27 handguns and this isn't one I felt any sense of urgency to make changes to. Heck, I swapped out my gen5 Glock19 before I pondered changes for the VE. Good luck in your search and I hope you can be more decisive than I when you do decide. In any matter be safe, learn, practice, ask questions and most of all enjoy!
