1911PD on the way
I just ordered a 1911PD and it should be here by Friday. I know I'm going to like this gun but I was wondering what the "new gun" thoughts are here for a 1911. Clean it first? Shoot it? Any advice is welcome. Thanks

Clean it, then shoot the heck out of it, especially if it is to be a carry (defensive) pistol. My PD took several trips back to the factory before it was made perfect. It was reliable from day one, but had a few other issues that needed fixin. You will love this gun, especially if you carry it everyday. Good Luck!

I'd clean it first. When I fieldstripped mine I found it to be pretty filthy with factory grime and the residue of whatever test firing they did. I also found the gun to be extremely tight and difficult to disassemble. Things have eased up nicely with use. I've now got about 500 rounds through mined and it functions like a Swiss watch. You'll never regret buying yours!!

I should have added that mine also needed a trip back to the factory. On mine, the slide release lever was jammed into the gun so tightly that it was almost impossible to disassemble it. Smith replaced the lever for free and that solved the problem.

Mine saw the dust cover scoring the slide. They fixed that problem and while it was there had the Performance Center work the gun over. Got it back and went to qualify, the plunger tube fell off. I called Smith and they took it back, fixed the tube issue and it has been 1000% since.

Carry my PD Commander everyday. Been on my side for about 5yrs now.
Field strip it and clean it up good. Lube it, up and head to the range. It has proved its worth over the years. It's one fine pistol.
