Default LASD has Re-Approved the 9mm M&P!

LASD has now re-approved the M&P 9mm in full size and compact. (No mag or thumb safety)

Deputies that previously qualified with the pistol have to have the extractor replaced, and I'm guessing that those who go take the class (and maybe have pistols under a certain serial number) will also have the extractor replaced.

They issued the pistol to a current academy class (along with a weaponlight, from what I hear) and it has apparently satisfied the concerns caused by the previous issue.

So now I really wanna go buy a M&P9C!

The LAPD was looking hard at the M&P for awhile. It impressed the Armory staff. Nice gun. Wouldn't mind having one in .40.

You should buy an M&P if inclined. I have 3, they work very well, maybe not the most romantic pistol, but superb as a functional tool.

All else aside, I can see why the M&P would be a great choice for LE departments. Beyond it's other attributes of reliability, simplicity and low felt recoil, it just fits just about anybodies hand better than other double stacks.

From another forum:
"It was determined that some production tooling at S&W was worn or out of spec and a bad batch of extractors was produced. These extractors later gave LASD the problems they encountered on the M&P pistol. Smith & Wesson provided LASD with replacement extractors that had a cleaner cut for retrofit in all subject pistols.

It was determined that the WinClean training ammunition was NOT the culprit, as earlier reports indicated.

It was also determined that the "premature barrel failure" was a result of work that was improperly done after the pistol left the factory.

LASD has released a new bulletin which reauthorizes the M&P pistol for duty use."
