Default Noobie 5906 Question

I've researched this a bit online and I haven't found an answer to this question. I'm thinking of buying a 5906 with some of my refund money, but there seems to be a lot of different versions with different features.

Which 59s were made with the front strap checkering as opposed to the strap serrations? Also, on Smith & Wessons' page it noted a couple options they could do on their firearms. Is that just the run of the mill guys, or is that the Performance Center guys? And if it isn't the former, how does one get the latter to work on it?

Hi Dan,
First of welcome to the forum, it's really a quite friendly place around here.

Over the years the 5906 has undergone some changes, however they all function pretty much the same. The changes made over the years have more or less been cosmetic. The very first 5906s had squared trigger gaurds, this then gave way to the round trigger gaurd that we have today on all metal frame guns. The guns that are produced today of course now include a light rail.

These are primarily the changes made over the years, as far as options you may be referring to the various trigger types, Traditional Double Action (TDA or DA/SA) or possibly Double Action Only (DAO). These will be denoted by a different model number other than 5906. Someone around here has a nice chart that will tell you what the 4-digit model numbers mean, such as 5906 or 5903 they are the same gun except the 5903 has an alloy frame, the 3 denoting alloy and the 6 indicating steel frame.

There are also several versions of the 5906 that came out of the Performance Center that will deviate from this but it's likely they also will have different model numbers.

As far as getting the Performance Center to work on a pistol it's as simple as calling them and speaking to one of the reps, they will give you all the information you need to get the pistol to them and give you and estimate of work.

Cheers,
Sam

So is it only the TSW that features the front grip checkering or were there others?
