I hope the buyers are happy with their used guns.
I can't see the price their getting.
The FBI should sell their out of date weapons themselves and use the proceedes to purchase new.

Taxpayer Purchased US Government Issued Weapons are no longer "surplused" and sold, they are cut up and scrapped.

Same person bought both of them. Most bidders dropped out between $800 and $1000.Guess he wanted both pretty bad. One on GB now with no movement and 3 days to go.Wait and see what happens ,time will tell.

While I am fascinated with the FBI 1076`s and their development ,it amazes me what some people will do or pay for material things.I wish it was that easy with health or happiness. Still curious if someone else will ante up what the guy is asking for the one on auction now.

The Bureau canceled the contract with S&W due to defective weapons. While in "transition training" 3 of the 5 guns in our group broke. Actual parts broke off. All our guns were returned to Quantico. When i retired i was offered to buy my old broken/fixed 1076 for $200.00. Turned it down. Good luck to the guy who buys those.

Wow. Guess I need to find an FBI agent to fondle my guns. Then they will all be worth at least double their present value!

Who's brilliant idea was that? Sounds like a total waste of money.

It would have been a good investment if you had bought 3 or 4 at $200 each.... People would have probably paid at least $600 for a broken one..

I see you haven't had a lot of interactions with the government . When you have money to spend that doesn't directly come out of your pocket, why not chop up the 1076s (1911s, Garands, M1 Carbines, Registered Magnums...) and get new stuff?

I was really sorry when the Bureau chopped up all of our Tommy Guns. Whata waste. I'd a bought one for a couple hundred bucks.

I still have my 1076 FBI model, new in box, never fired. Mags, manual, even the original vapor paper and, I think, plastic baggies for the mags. I think I paid $300 for it back when they had the contract overrun/issues and you could buy them cheap. I recall they also had problems with the grip size for some of the smaller-handed agents. It's a big gun, for sure!
Stay safe. RPR

First off, the guns are very collectible and the price may be high for now but someday $2000 will likely seem like a bargain. These FBI contract 1076's are still pretty young pistols and there isn't many of them out there, especially if they are part of the 300 or so that first went to Quantico for testing.
Also, these guns are far from low quality as some seem to be hinting at. Many of the agents that carried them seem to have wanted to keep them from what I have heard. If you notice from Ladyfeds letter, it wasn't like they got the pistols and sent them back in a couple weeks. They kept them, and probably fired them a lot, for two years before being returned.
Lastly, the gentleman that bought those pistols is very likely a member of this forum and probably doesn't appreciate being criticized for the way he spends HIS money. Don't be bitter because he outbid you on the auction. And you never know, those guns may hold a particular interest for him that you just don't appreciate. Now getting off my soap box.

I sold my confirmed FBI 1076 to a retired FBI agent on here a good while back. I had to have some money; he wanted the gun and its box and all the goodies. I am happy it is in his collection now; it's sort of where it belongs, if that makes sense....sort of like Barney's WWI motorcycle he got at the surplus.....it's theirs, Barn....the Milo brothers....etc...

While there may be some validity to the seemingly high prices that "some" people pay for various items, they are still just material "junk" in the long run.
The same situation exists with musical instruments to a great degree. "Elvis touched this guitar (worth $500 otherwise), great bargain at $1500". "Elvis played this guitar (same guitar), great bargain at $2500". "Elvis played and sweated on this guitar (same guitar), sweat marks still present. Great bargain at $5000". And so on.
So, yeah, be kind to the individuals that have some internal drive to own such things. The rest of us don't understand it and never will. But, in the long run, it really still doesn't make any sense at all. It's still just a gun, which doesn't work any better, or maybe worse, than others in the same caliber and action type that are selling for a lot worse.
Cars, guitars, guns and anything else you care to think about, are the stuff dreams are made of. And dreams are all in your head. Nowhere else.

I don't know what church you go to but in mine we believe that he that dies with the most guns wins and probably dies later.
And not everyone buys guns just to HAVE them. Some of us actually see them as a better investment than stocks these days. Plus you get to shoot them in the meantime.
And by the way, I doubt the guy who has been shelling out $2000 for these 1076's really cares what we think after all.

I remember
being able to pick up these (std 1076) for $400 because they were very big bulky guns not good for concealment shot high priced ammo and hard to find. to each his own.

Hey Sniper 47 ! I've been called a lot worse and survived.
Yes, I'm old! 65 to be exact. And, I've never understood the majority of the rationalization that many people use to justify buying various things.
I don't knock the person. I just don't agree with the reasoning. If it's your "schtick" to buy various things for various, dubious, reasons, then cool. Have at it. I won't hate you in the morning!
Sorry it I came across as a "stick in the mud". But, I'm just a little old fashioned. My Dad was even more old fashioned and I picked up a lot from him, God Bless Him!
Yeah, have a ball my friend, buy what you want, when you want, how you want. But, don't expect all to agree with your actions. And enjoy the right to disagree and still be friends.

I saw someone pay 25k for a fixed blade knife. Why? Because a few years before it sold for 20K and a few years before that it sold for 17k...
I think that at a certain point you pass beyond the realm of "what I think it's worth" and into the land of "what will it be worth".
With the price now hovering at 2000 you can bet that collectors all over will be combing the globe to find the remaining ones. And you can be sure that sooner or later someone will show up here showing the FBI 1076 that he practically stole for $400 at a gun show somewhere.
In the end, things are only worth what you can sell them for and right now that means these guns are worth $2000.
Just my 2 pennies...

Just like that old, blue worn .357 that nobody wanted for $300 a few years ago - even though it had been carried by Melvin Purvis or Jelly Bryce or somebody. See what a RM with Bureau provenance brings now, adjust for inflation and that's the price of one of these 1076s will be fetching in 25 years. Maybe sooner, since the RMs are pretty well accounted for - just collectors selling to other collectors at this point.

The price seems high to me,
but maybe the gun was used by Melvin Purvis to shoot John Dillinger?

SgtSam, true words of wisdom. I agree a thousand percent. I think alot of families would be in much less debt if they would have followed your words, advice. To each their own, buy what you want. For me, one nice gun is enough. I cherish it. I don't need the most toys, a safe full of guns can not make me happy. I need to take care of my body, take care of my family. Life is good be happy
The less I have the more I gain

Considering that this is a gun forum and not a health and wellness forum, it is natural to talk ABOUT GUNS! This is our hobby. Hobbies are for us to enjoy. Some are fanatical in our hobby, certainly. But to imply that having more than one gun is an attempt to buy happiness is simply judging your peers too harshly. Charlton Heston was a champion of our hobby. Should he have donated his money to the United Way instead of assembling a virtual museum of firearms history? That is a matter of opinion, and I know what they say about opinions. But what a guy does with his own money is his own business and he doesn't have to justify that to anyone. That's my opinion :-)

HI. There are still Bargins out there. Earlier this month I pick up a 1076 at our local Cabelas. It had the Box, tatered, but a box. On the Box it states FBI Academy. The serial number matches. Serial number is THB92xx. I will have to get my first S&W letter, but being 99.99% sure this is an ex FBI gun, it will be well worth it. The price I paid was $450.00, and they were asking more!

I have a S&W 1076 10mm that I bought at the same time the FBI
went to the 10mm. I have 3 mags and lots of ammo. Still in the box it came in new. I fired two qualification rounds for CLEET
and a few practice rounds.I sent it to S&W on the recall for the
decocking lever check and have the two little stars stamped on side. I have been told that it is a antique and should sell for more
than I paid for it new. Can anyone tell me if this is true.

Hello,
A much wiser and older collecter than me once said "You can pay too much for something that will never have any real value and you can pay too much too soon for something that will."
Personally I wish the buyer the best on their purchase. I hope they gain either personal or financial satisfaction from their purchase--or even, better, both.
The FBI 1076--or the 10mm for that matter--isn't an interest of mine, but I am interested in seeing where prices and interest goes for those who are interested in them.
Best,
Heekma

A couple of thoughts here.
There's a few states in America which are governed by nanny state politicos who've made it clear they're not waiting for DC to set the pace on civil disarmament via gun control. The clock is ticking for gun owners in states like Maryland, Conneticutt, and especially New York State to get what they want ASAP before it gets banned.
$2000 might be much for myself or someone in Texas, but I can understand why a NY gun collector would drop $2k on a gun. For him, its now or never.

Yeah, good luck, I know of only 4 for sure. Took me a long time to get/beg to purchase my two 15 rounder's! Would be kind of nice if there was a roll call on them to just get a idea of what is out there.

This thread is now three years old. I find all the condemnation of the buyer to be interesting. Especially in light of the prices folks are currently paying for .223. .22LR and any and all "assault" rifles. But hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

There are people for whom $4K isn't really a lot of money. If that was me I might have been tempted by a pair of 1076!

Gentlemen (and lady, although LadyFed has not been here for a while), this thread is on its third revival and coming up on 11 years old. But feel free to wax nostalgic over the days of FBI 1076s 'only' bringing $2K.
