I thought they were only available to law enforcement and security agencies.

My brother-in-law works for Brink, and he said that a few people from his Dept. have the newer 4566TSW with integrated rail. I do not believe you can order a new 4566TSW from S&W, as they are listed under the Law Enforcement section of their website. Could ask the member selling one on the site, how he manage to purchase his?

As mentioned above, overruns from LE orders are sent to distributors for eventual retail sale. Same goes for dealer and contract samples, just in lower numbers. The patterns I have noticed over the last 25 years indicate that these overruns are sent to smaller distributors, not the big names. The pistols themselves seem to end up with small shops, local guns shows and on the web.
The Integral rail models in .45 and .40 (CHP) that I have seen were priced very similar to their other TSW counterparts. They are uncommon, but they are available. I think the current one offered on this forum is priced accordingly, as all TSW models in my area retail for about that price.
The truly rare guns are those made as samples for a contract that was not won. Since these would never have been put into production, they usually number as 1/2 dozen or less.

The 4006TSW with the integral rail is the latest CHP issue pistol.

Here's one in PC CQB price range. Are these assembled by PC people? Are the as good as a PC CQB 45?

While they are superb pistols and IMO without par for a service use 45, these 4566TSW's are not really in the same league as a PC CQB 45. They are assembly line guns not custom shop.
Grinder has a very nice two tone PC 4566 CQB up on Gunbroker for just a little more than what these integral rail 4566TSW's are priced. Regards 18DAI.

Yes, they are.
LAPD has restarted classes, enabling recruits who were trained on Glocks to transition to S&W 3rd generation 45's. The classes are full, and many are making the transition.
The West Viginia State Police were supposed to get brand new Melonited 4566TSW's - but that is now in doubt. No matter, they won't accept the M&P in any case.
Of course the CHP is still recieving the integral rail 4006TSW's.
There are several agencies locally who are sticking with 3rd generation 45's as well.
I'll retire in twelve years with a S&W 4506-1/4566/4516-3 in my holster. Regards 18DAI.

They are not any heavier than the vaunted 1911. They are - unlike most 1911's - bet your life reliable. With a good belt and holster the weight is negligible.
Good triggers out of the box, which get even better with use. Accurate and look good doing all that. Whats not to like?
Besides, some of us prefer metal handguns with hammers. And not all rookies are unfamiliar with handguns. Lots of them have no use for striker fired plastic either. Nice to work for an agency that allows choice. Regards 18DAI.

^--- I was going to say what 18DAI said. Lot's of LEO's around here carry 1911's (Kimber) and they lack a lot of features that 3rd gens have standard: elongated trigger guard, front strap serrations, undercut frame, ramped barrel, etc.
S&W 3rd Gens were very much ahead of their time!

I carry one and I'm trying to get another. I LOVE 3rd gen .45s and will endeavor to have one on my person all the time whenever possible. The weight is NOT an issue, as others have said, with the right belt and holster.

Not sure if the right hand knows what the left hand is doing at S&W but I e-mailed them at the 1st of this week about how and where I could go about finding and purchasing a new 4566TSW with the integral rail and their reply was "unfortionaly we are no longer offering or manufactoring ANY of the 3rd generation line of pistols anymore however we invite you to visit our website and look at the 1911 and the MP line " . I replied back ..... NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a 4013TSW... great condition and shooter but I'm not impressed by the attached rail - it almost looks like an after thought! Count me in for any .40 or .45 3rd gen with an internal rail... PLEASE!

My guess on the value of an integral rail 4566TSW would be in the $800 to $950 bracket. Thats for a NIB example.
Melonite finish? Regards 18DAI.
