Default 2nd and 3rd generation frames and slides

I've been playing around a bit with my pistols, and it seems that all of my 3rd generation slides and frames will swap around with no problem, and same with 2nd generation pistols. All 9mm by the way.

However, when I try to put a 3rd generation slide on a 2nd generation frame, it seems like it should go. After about 1cm, the slide meets resistance as if the frame rails are a different dimension. I certainly don't want to force anything, so that's as far as I have gotten.

What is the point you are asking yourself? I have a slide and barrel from a 3914 with all of the 3rd generation advantages, and I'd like to put it on my 469 frame. I've seen hybrids like this in the past, and I'd like to know how they are done.

I'd rather not make any modifications to the frame, in case this doesn't work out. I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good pistol.

However, I think it would be cool to have Novaks and the improved safety lever on my 469.

Here are some pics of my 2nd gen 659. It is an 'interim' model with 2nd and 3rd gen features. It has a gen 2 slide on a gen 3 frame.

Hmm, not sure why it won't go. I got a complete
3916 upper for my 669 and it worked great, although
a "bit" too long in the back. It matches up with my
5906, (and 3906,) but it stays on the 5906. I got an
early 6906 complete upper hoping it would be perfect
on the 669, and while it functions perfect, it is a "bit"
short in the back. It sure is better than the smashed
rear sight on the 669 upper. I could not find a replacement
sight, and both complete uppers were not that costly.

I put a 6906 upper on a 469 frame and it worked.

Was wanting the "reverse two tone" look and had a 469 I bought for cheap and a 6906 I bought REALLY cheap because someone had dremeled all of the finish of of the frame. The upper was in great shape.

For some reason however, it shot to the left of point of aim in that configuration. When the correct slides back on the respective pistols, they both shot to point of aim. No idea why the hybrid shot to the left.

The revisions, or variants, need to be early 3rd gen top ends in order to work on 2nd gen frames.

The later 3rd gen revisions with wide barrel hoods wont work on a 2nd gen frame.

If the 3914 top end you are trying to use has the "Smith & Wesson" rollmark centered on the slide, it is likely a 2nd or 3rd revision top end. You probably need one of the earlier 3914 top ends. The one with the Smith & Wesson roll marks forward on the slide and the"four line" rollmarked behind it.

Good luck! Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Edited to add: A third gen safety/decocker - any revision - WILL INSTALL on a 2nd gen slide.

this is great information, i was hoping to add a 3914 upper to my 439 lower, end up with a 1911 commander size gun. I havent actually tried firing it yet but the slide fits fine on the frame, does that mean it will work ?

i installed my rollmark centered 3914 slide on my 439 frame, it functions without issue. I'm not sure about the "wide hood" though
