Why Folks Want a Model 52
At least it's why I wanted one. That's a .607" group (measured center to center) shot from sandbags at 25 yds with my Model 52-2 with an UltaDot mounted. The reloads are Starline brass, Remington 148 HBWC and 3.2 of Win 231 with a Federal primer. I can't touch that shooting the same distance off-hand. I'd be real curious as to what that group would look like shot from a Ransom Rest.

If you bring it to Illinois I will put it in the ransom rest for you. I have the rest and Mod 52 grip adapters available.

Thanks for the offer but a trip from Southwest Kansas to Illinois is a bit of a stretch. I'll just assume it could do even better with the human element completely removed.

The Model 52's were super accuate and had the best single action trigger of any semi auto. I wish they could have had the same trigger on the 952's.
I used to use 3.2 gr. W-231 behind the Remington 148 gr. LHBWC but switched to 2.8 gr. Bullseye with the same bullet. Both loads gave comparable results.

Hey, a fellow 'Hawk! Whereabouts in SW Kansas? We used to make annual pilgrimages out there to hunt prairie dogs.

I had to pay full price for my Model 52 in the late 70s, but my shooting buddy got his, brand new, in the box for $150.
He was at the sporting goods counter of a large box store when some dude wanted to return his Model 52, it didnt work, couldnt get it to feed. He was trying to shoot normal 38s.
The Clerk also didnt have a clue and took the gun back. My buddy told him he might know someone who knew how to fix it. He talked the sporting goods manager into letting it go for the $150.
He shot the same Model 52 while shooting pistol for the All Guard team.
He didnt display one bit of guilt.

I would be interested what overall length you use with the Remington HBWC loads.
Thank you

I'm in Garden City. I'm not a prairie dog shooter but it seems to me most of the folks really serious about it are going elsewhere. You need to take-up pheasent shooting. I get my limit of them running them over driving to the range.
625smith:
I was impressed with myself until I saw your group. And shot with iron sights. I'll need the name of your optometrist.
Troystat:
My only excuse is that I'm an old fart with eyes to match. Check out 625smith's group. Now that's shooting!
Iron Sight:
Until now, I've never measured my O.A.L. When I set-up my dies, I went by what I read on this and other forums and put a crimp on it that you can barely see. The thick lube Remington puts on those 148s doesn't lend itself to very exact measurements, but my trusty Starret says 1.168"-1.170". Hope this helps.

Attached target was shot @ 50yds one handed . The 52 will teach you the fundamentals ( grip , trigger control , sight alignment ) . Of course it'll worry you crazy , but that's half the fun . I use R-P cases trimmed to 1.145 , Fed 100 primers , R-P 148 HBWC's , taper crimp .370 - .369 . My gun prefers W231 3.1 - 3.2grs , 2.9 VVN320 , 2.8 BE , 2.7 WST , 3.6 VVN 340 all good loads . Max OAL will be determined by magazines & chamber depth . I stick with 1.145 seated flush & light taper crimp 'cause it works for me .

It's the only handgun I own that when I take a friend out to shoot we tack a quarter to the post as a target, and it gets hit immediately.
You think you're good until you hand it over to someone that hasn't ever shot one before, and he does just as well as you do. What a gun!

That's some fine shooting. My problem is that I spend too much time shooting a dozen or so pistols and revolvers (and rifles) and not enough with just one leaving me sort of a half-assed shooter with a variety of calibers and not really good with any one of them.

Sometimes when I'm having a good day at the range with my 52-2 some one will ask me what I'm shooting. When I tell them and explain what it is I generally get two responses. The older guys (like me) "really think it's neat, heard about it, but never saw one", etc. The younger guys shooting "black guns" are disappointed that it's not a 9mm or .40 and that it only holds 5 rounds.
I usually let them shoot it so they can feel what a trigger should be.
After that they are often converts.
FWIW: I agree with the comment about the 952. I had one and sold it primarily due to the trigger.

It's a relief to know there was someone else in this world who sold his 952. I never could get mine to shoot. In fact, I have a CZ 75 SA that could outshoot it even on a bad day.
