I have the chance to purchase either one of these. 5906 is a Leo trade in probably about 75%. The 915 looks 95%. They are about the same price, the 915 entails a 30 minute drive. I need some recommendations.

Thanks

5906 would be my vote, the value models have plastic parts in such areas as the mag catch.

Go for the 5906. Ex-LEO's are a bargain. No matter what it looks like, what matters is inside, and has been maintained by a S&W factory trained armorer. Besides, you just can't break them. I have some 5903 Ex-LEO's, (the alloy version of the 5903) and they have never had a failure of any kind. -Ed.

+1. I have both a 5906 and 5903. Great guns.

the 915 does have a few plastic parts but still durable and a bit lighter due to alloy frame. the 06 is built to withstand atomic bomb blast. remove the mag safety on both for a little better trigger.
both good pistols wish they still made them and so do lots of others.

I'm not worried about the weight it's only going to be range gun. I have a 4013 and Glock 27 , chambered for 357 sig, for carry.

Go with the 5906 if the mechanics are good. A scotchbrite pad and about 10 minutes will have it looking like new. If the grips are worn, a new set costs les than $20.

People are confusing the 915 with the 910. The 915 does not have plastic parts. I owned a 915 and think it is an excellent handgun. I put thousands and thousands of rounds through mine without issue. The 5906 is a great gun too, no doubt, but I would get the 915 given the same opportunity.

Yes, other than the rear sight and a alloy frame the 915 is the very same gun as a 5906. It would run about 10ozs lighter than the 5906, but if it's never going to be a carry gun that wouldn't make any differance.

I have the 5906 with Crimson Trace grips. It is a great shooter and all metal. Yes it is heavy but I am not a big fan of plastic guns.

Given the condition, I would take the 915 hands down. I've done a side by side breakdown of a 915 and 910 -- there is no real comparison. The 915 was the first of the economy line which later bacame officially know as the "Value Line" as they began adding plastic parts. It is much more a true 3rd generation than the later plastic/metal mix-breeds; internally, it's pure 3rd generation. They are way under appreciated. I believe you will be making a big mistake by letting one in 95% or better get away. JMHO

By the way, the 915 is more closely compared with a 5903. I have both pistols with alloy frames and believe they are perfect for 9mm. I also have a 5906, and while it's a great pistol, it is unnecessarily heavy for a 9mm. Again, JMHO.

Here's mine that's about 99% . . . a truly lovely pistol . . . and accurate, too. ;)

Wanting to buy a M915.

I am trying to find a great condition M915. My wife had one and shot well with it and it grew on me. The down side is the alloy frame wears so I am trying to find a great condition frame.

I vote 5906-probably one of the best S&W ever built, mine's an '89 with adjustable sights.

I have a 915, fire it every week at the range. Top notch pistol and other than the grip mine has no plastic parts that I have found. I've taken it down to the basics ala AGI video. I wonder if the plastic didn't come in with the actual Value Line.

That's exactly what happen. The absolute worse feature on the later Value Line pistols are the cheap-a** plastic sights. And, of course, the runner-up for worse feature is the plastic recoil spring guide. Oh, and that squared-off slide à la Glock is right there in third place. JMHO

My vote is for the 5906. About the toughest 9mm ever made.
