Best .22 Ammo For Model 41
Just bought a Model 41 for use in Bullseye competition. I have heard that the only ammo that can be used with this gun is CCI Std Velocity. Is that a fact or do some of you shoot other brands as well? Would like to hear from others about their experience with other ammo brands with this particular gun. Thanks.

I own a Model 41 that I bought in the early '90s, with both barrels, that I have never gotten around to shooting.
A year or so back I was in a conversation with a guy who was, at that time, on a DoD sponsored shooting team. He mentioned that CCI was the preferred ammo for a Model 41, without specifying which flavor of CCI. He also mentioned that some people that he knew were cutting some portion (I seem to recall 3/4 of one coil, but I'm not really sure of that) of the recoil spring off to further improve function.

M41 Ammo
I have a new Model 41 purchased 6-1-10. Have called Smith & Wesson customer service twice and ask what ammo is recommended and both times was told CCI Mini Mag.
I am very happy to own and shoot this firearm and have fired both SV and HV CCI in it. There were some malfunctions in the beginning but for the most part it runs very well now. Recently I Ordred and recieved a case (5000 bullets) of CCI SV. I think I shoot the SV with better accuracy than the HV.

I've had a 41 since the early eighties, and I have put anything and everything through it and it doesn't seem to mind! It used to see a lot of the Federal 550 round bulk pack that Wal-Mart sells. I haven't shot it much in the last few years, I used to use it for bowling pin shoots but these days I am shooting a 10 shot 4" 617.

I have used Remington SV and while it is accurate enough, it has FTF issues. Maybe 5%.
The CCI SV Green Tag is really good ammo, but it costs a lot more than others. However the CCI SV works just fine and is much less expensive. Never had a FTF issue with either one.
I personally like the Federal Gold Target, it seems to run well and has great accuracy. I buy it when ever there is a sale somewhere, which isn't too often! Maybe a .05% failure rate, very low.
I have never shot any HV out of this firearm, it's my understanding that a steady diet of HV can beat up your gun so if SV works well, why use the HV?

+1
I used to shoot Rem target but the last 2 boxes I tried had a very high FTF rate - Something is going on with Rem ammo.
CCI standard, select, and green tag all work very well in my 41 with either barrel length.

This question has come up before and while many shooters were getting good results from various "lower velocity" or target ammo the consensus had been that CCI standard velocity is the "go to" ammo for the model 41. I myself use CCI SV with good results and avoid the HV stuff. I don't want to add any extra wear and tear and unneeded mileage.

Since you mention Bullseye competition, I would recommend CCI green tag for matches and standard velocity for practice. All CCI ammo functions flawlessly in my 41.While the standard velocity gives great accuracy, green tag is even more accurate. I have been using a fair amount of the mini-mags lately since my 41 is primarily getting used for steel plates these days, and the mini-mags get out to the 25 yard plates a little faster than the standard velocity.

I use CCI-SV almost exclusively it is more reliable than some of the high priced specialty target ammunition in my guns. Use whatever works for you stay sub-sonic, (below 1100 fps).
Standard Velocity is a poorly defined term. Go to the maker’s site and look up ammunition which interests you. You may be surprised to find that one maker’s high velocity is the same as the next guy’s standard.
Further most of the velocities will be for a 16” barrel. From the 41 subtract at least 100 fps from the 16” figure, the difference between the 5 & 7” barrel speed in .22lr is trivial.

I bought mine in 1959. Back then I used Remington green box standard velocity. It shot a lot better than I ever could. Those times are gone forever. I use CI Green Box in it now.
However when I was in Alaska in the 1960s, I used it as a holster gun to hunt snowshoe rabbits. I fed it high velocity hollow-points and had no troubles.

I just bought a nice 1981 Model 41 LNIB with only a few breakin rounds shot through it. I have been using Walmart Remington 550 pack 36 Grn. from the start for fun target shooting and it has not missed a beat yet!

From my point of view it's not an issue of accuracy or reliability of any HV ammo because they are both those things, it's the battering of the gun that worries me.

Loco Weed you are exactly right. Old or new why subject it to unnecessary battering. The very high velocity ammunition has a higher impulse and more battering. I have a tuned 10/22 rifle its maker says no very or ultra high velocity ammunition.
Furthermore the higher vel is only achieved from a longer barrel unless you have one of those rare 16” factory barrels on your M41.

CCI 22cal. LR SV
I get CCI 22cal.LR SV ammo locally for $225.00 per case(5000)>$.045 per rnd.Works great in my Mod.17-2,my Ruger MarkII,and my wifes ruger MarkIII.
Recently got the hots for a Bullseye pistol(must have a exotic Europeon
model) so while pricing out a new Hammerli Ex-esse, checked out their ammo prices and Lapua markets X-act 22LR Ammo for $2400.00 a case!!
or in excess of $.50 per rnd.(del.).......That's asking a bit too much for '22 target ammo....I think I'll stick with the CCI..!

My 41 only likes CCI std (low velocity), otherwise I get Failures to Feed. With the CCI std I have no problems, great pistol.
