Question 645 Extractor

I'm in need of a new extractor for my 645. I can't find one anywhere. S&W sent me a prepaid label but before I could send the gun back We moved. I have contacted S&W numerous times and get no response at all. If anyone has any spares for sale I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

You might try contacting Frank Smith at the link below. LSG is an authorized S&W warranty station. He might be able to repair the gun, or provide a source for parts.

If it were me, and I weren't an armorer, I'd have the extractor replaced and fitted by either the factory, or one of the authorized repair centers. Especially in an older 645, as we were told that sometimes the older machining of some of the older slides required a bit more fitting of the extractors.

Fitting an extractor to a 645 normally requires filing the pad. Possibly bending the tail slightly to increase spring tension. Nothing like the early model 59's. the factory had three diffrent extractors 1,2,3's they couldnt drill the extractor pin hole in the same place every time and to get the proper "headspace" required the diffrent extractors. # 2 was normal, 1 was short and 3 was long. While a police armorer in central California I maintained over 800 59'sm and then later 645's

Unless they've changed them since 2013, the part numbers for the 645's were/are:
235680000 $20.06 O L EXTRACTOR
235690000 $20.06 X EXTRACTOR
235700000 $20.06 O S EXTRACTOR

They didn't list it in the commercial part list, but they also offered a couple heavier extractor springs for the .45's (and 10mm).
The standard spring is part #10202, but they also have a Heavier than standard, #23563 and an Extra Heavy spring, #23433. The use of one or another of these springs ought to get the normal tension up in recommended the 5-6 1/2 lb range (measured with a force dial gauge using the appropriate hooked extension to get the reading at the moment of extractor movement, or 'deflection').

The ultimate "check" after the normal bench checks are good is that the tension isn't too light (failures-to-extract), or too heavy (failures-to-feed), and that the empty cases are extracted and new rounds fed/chambered during live-fire.

As paulj84003 mentioned, sometimes the guns done on the older hand-controlled equipment may require some additional attention when fitting repair parts. That's why it's prudent to have it done by someone with the training and experience to work on them.

S&W extractors are not a do-it-yourself drop in job. It looks like it, but it is not. You run a high risk of turning a pistol of known high reliability into a jam-a-matic.
