"new" 3906 - finally home
Thanks again to the many Forum members who helped me with advice and information on this model - previously unkown to me. I found it in a gunshop in central NY about three weeks ago. The more I learned about it, the more intrigued I was about making it part of my small but growing collection (someone commented the other day about it being a "disease" ). I was very pleased that it came with its orginal box and packing, cleaning kit, manual and warranty paperwork. Of course, a spare mag - and a little key-chain rear sight adjustment tool. I field-stripped it last weekend and it is in beautiful condition inside, showing little usage. I expect that it was manufactured around 1989-1991. Looks like it's spent most of its life in the box - something that will soon change, as it looks to be a great little range piece. Also pictured here are its new friends: a 6906 that I recently purchased from a Forum member; and a 6904 that I found NIB a few months back in a SD sporting goods store. Again thanks to all who helped with this acquisition!

That is a very nice 3906. I bet it will shoot just as good as it looks. Let us know how it shoots and enjoy your new gun.

The 3906 with adjustable sights is one of my favorites.
Congratulations and good luck with it.

That's a great looking specimen. I have my eye on a 3906 myself but it happens to be a fixed-sight version. Hope your gun turns out to be a good shooter.

The 3906 has a slim grip that holds a single stack magazine. It holds 8 rounds. The 5906 has a double stack and holds 14/15 rounds in the standard mags. Some MecGar mags might hold more.

Some time ago, a NIB 3906 languished on the Auction Arms website for what seemed like months. I rationalized at the time that I already had a 3906 (and 3904 for that matter) and did not need another. It haunts me to this day that I did not jump on it.

Just a FYI updt.
The newer 3906 factory mags now hold 9rds in their std mags and still fit flush in the frame.

3906 serial number range and dates of mfr.
I see that the preceding post has a pic of a 3906, with a TCL serial number. I'm new to the serializing of S&W pistols. Since only 2K of this model were produced, should I expect to see any 3906 have a TCL number, or do they use a different letter/number series each year of production. I'd also appreciate information of the production dates. Mine is TCL45xx. Finally, I'm sure there's a handy publication that has this info, short of a Jinks Letter. Please clue me in on that, as well!
THANK YOU!

XAVMECH, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson third edition, available at Barnes & Noble will be of much use.
As it seems you have the S&W bug now, you need to get this book! Regards 18DAI

Nice! I just got a 5906. S&W metal framed pistols are underrated.
