Realistic S&W 1006 Winchester Silvertip 10mm Velocity?

What is a realistic velocity of newly manufactured Winchester 10mm Silvertip ammunition from a 1006? Is it just a hot .40? Annual qual is Monday and I have to choose...4506 or 1006. I like the +1 capacity of the 10mm, but don't want a hot .40.

Here's the published, can't help on the actual:

Cartridge: 10mm Automatic Bullet Weight: 175
Muzzle Velocity: 1290
Barrel Length: 5.50"

IIRC, a 180gr. .40 S&W is usually pushing 1000 to 1050fps.

Personally, I would take a look at bullet design. IMHO, I don't feel the silvertip is on par with some of the modern bullets being offered in .45 acp.

My choice would be the 4506.

I think you could say .40 is a downloaded 10mm

From what I understand most current production factory loads are weaker than the original 10mm full power from miami vice days. I think Double tap ammo comany makes some of the hot stuff.

I have never shot a factory 10mm load that was any good. They are all weak 40 loads, unless you go for Double Tap which is expensive. I would do the 4506 and Winchester PDX-1 load.

My last chrono session with Win. Silvertip was out of my Colt Delta Elite, in May of 2006. High was 1295 fps., low was 1202 fps. So, alot of deviation. Average was 1234 fps. at 575 ft. lbs. Nope, its a bit, as in quite a bit more than what a .40 S&W can do with a 175 gr. slivertip.
Its what I carried my last 5 years on the road, before retirement. Oh, as for expansion, in test tank, it expands to .805", with some fragmentation.

I just looked at DT web site . I like what I seen in 10mm alot.

I got a five shot average of 1270 with an extreme spread of 23 out of my G20 on 6-23-10. I received them from CTD about a week earlier. They're not quite like shooting DT but you definitely know when you touch one off.

A 40 is a weak 10mm.

Silvertip 10mm is on par with .41 mag Silvertips...

I love a 4506, but love 1006s with Silvertips about 50 percent more.

Sorry, but no .45 matches the 10mm Silvertip. 10mm is also inherently the most accurate round on the market -- and many 10mms have more energy at 100 yards than .45s do at the muzzle.

4506s are ALWAYS my second choice -- ALWAYS -- with no apologies, ever.

No, the 10mm came first, and it was later reduced (power/velocity) to meet the 'newer' requirements of the FBI, the new round was shorter and slower than the 10mm and was called 40 Smith & Wesson

The 10 is definitely hotter than the 40, like 38 special to 357 magnum...the 10mm would be my choice....why not qualify with both?

Hornady XTP 180gr is rated at 1180fps and clocks at a tad over 1200fps from a 5" (Delta Elite). I haven't clocked Win 175gr Silvertip, but they should be in the same ballpack. Even the hottest 40 -- DoubleTap and BuffaloBore from a 5" -- can't match these "medium" 10mm loads. I am a big 40 fan, but a 10mm it is not.

In 30 years of law enforcement, I carried a 10mm from 1990, to retirement, in 2003. I think I carried almost every round available for 10mm. Tested most of them for the department I worked for. Everything from Norma 170's, Corbon 135's, Win. Black Talon (if they had only increased the velocity, what a buzz saw that was), Hornady 170's that became 180's.
Other than the premium loadings from Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, and Garrett, the Win. Silvertip, 175 gr. load was the one that best met our needs, that was within budget constraints.

I used to own a 1006...I never chronographed it, but I always found the silvertip 10mm load to be accurate and easy to shoot.

Hi,

New to these forums. Wanted to mention that many people on the mdshooters forum have had good luck with the Swamfox Gunworks 10mm loads. Some of them are max-nuclear, though (as high as 1525fps 800 ft/lbs energy with Hornady 155gr., and heavier weights too) and fully-supported barrels are recommended for those. He seems to still have Gold Dot's in, which can't be said for many these days.

He does have 175 gr. Silvertips, rated at 1350fps 700 ft/lbs energy@ Muzzle from a Stock Glock 20. His 155 Silvertips do 1450fps 720 ft/lbs.

I haven't tried DT, but I have seen some recent negative YouTube publicity of chronographs that were as far as 250fps off of what the box stated (10mm).

As I recall, the 175 grain silvertips clocked right around 1270 fps out of my 1076. I think it's a pretty good load.

"Modern" bullets?????????

The last time I shot Silvertips into wet newsprint at 40 yards from a 1006 and 1086, they expanded to .81 inches...

There aren't ANY "modern" bullets that do better than that...

That's more than doubling in size.

Realize, 10mms have more advantages over .40s than just raw speed.

The case length makes them very, very, very reliable to feed and eject. Actions have lots to lock onto.

In all the 10mms I've ever owned or shot, I've never, ever seen one actually "jam". 1006s are the best of the lot -- from what I've seen.

Can't say that for a .40 -- by a long stretch.

Plus, a 10mm is inherently the most accurate round I've ever seen.

I love .45s and 4506s -- but, please, don't try comparing them to 10mms and 1006s...

A 10mm has more energy with a Silvertip at 100 yards than 95 percent of .45s have coming out of the barrel.

Silvertips still are the "gold" standard -- like it or not. They're just hot enough -- plenty accurate -- well made -- available -- reliable -- and fairly cheap.

I'd own and carry 4506s -- but for what a 1006 will do in comparison, it's still almost always my first pick -- with Silvertips.

Most of the "real world" speeds I've seen on STs have been around 1250 fps out 1006s.

You can duplicate or even better it by reloading various 170 gr JHPs with about 14.5 grains of Accurate N°9. The 1006 seems indistructable and shoots quit good with these reloads. Recoil is felt less than .45ACP +p and velocity figures from reloading tables shows 1250-1300 fps.

Although CAUTION is the word here: Change the spring and put some Wolff extra Power Spring kit on the 1006 before that!

Uh...isn't PDX $1/shot? DT is less than that...
For full power 10mm -- In addition to DT, there is Buffalo Bore, SwampFox, and Elite Ammo.
