Question 4516-1 clarification

I understand the difference between SA/DA, at least I think I do, I don't understand how my 4516 is considered to be DA. It seems to me it is only SA. Thanks for the education.

Usually referring to the trigger action, SA- trigger just releases the hammer, DA- trigger will cock and release the hammer. That's why most S&W autos are called either TDA or SA/DA, where they can be fired double action first shot and then single action for the following shots. Then you can throw in DAO, Safe Action, partially cocked striker, fully cocked striker, etc, etc.

After you chamber a cartidge, use the safety to lower the hammer. It is intended to be carried with the hammer down, making the first shot DA.

That makes sense, thanks, I've just never realized the hammer going through the full cycle on the first round.

Can the 4516 and variants, no dash, -1 or -2, be obtained DAO? I am on the hunt for one but want to avoid anything in DAO. Is there a concise description of the essential differences between these three? I hope I am not hijacking the thread.

Deanodog,
I just found that as well as a chart showing the S&W numbering system. That part makes sense. Still Googling the differences between the -1, -2 and no dash.

Thank you
