Default Shorty 40 mk3...picture and a question

Just picked up this Shorty 40 from a GS in Texas...God bless Texas! It is used in excellent condition (outside of the grip) but was dirty when I received it. Now I can't believe that the previous owner of this gun took such good cosmetic care but would leave it so dirty! I figure a guys at the GS said, "Hey,...ever shoot one of these? Let's give it a run!" No big deal but that is the only logical reason I can think of that it would be so dirty. I didn't mind cleaning it though...gave me a chance to inspect it. All the serial #'s match as they should and it doesn't appear to have been shot much (very little evidence of slide movement on the rails) so I think I'm good to go.

Anyway, can someone tell me what the advantage of the barrel bushing is? Similar to floating a rifle barrel? Also, anyone know why it has two recoil springs...one smaller one inside of the other. The slide action feels great when cycled by hand but I have not seen this before.

Will definitely have it to the range in a couple of days and am sure it will live up to my expectations...thanks much for any education anyone can provide me with on this gun.

Its a totally different package on the P/C,from a reg 4006, the type/fit of the frame/rails, barrel, slide stop/catch and bushing are all hand fit , great lil gun, should shoot 1" at 25YDS all day long.
Ive carried a 9 shorty for years, I always laugh when guys pull out there 2000.00 custom full size guns, then I shoot a group with this compact that is almost half the size.
The P/C autos in their day were absolutely the best buy in a custom gun, unfortunately, no longer made they are starting to climb in price.
Gald you got one now, great carry gun. congrats, Bob

I used to be up on this stuff.

The briley type spherical bushing allows a tighter fit for better accuracy. Since the barrel locks and unlocks with an up and downward movement a solid bushing that tight wwould cause some springing with the barrel to bushing and extended wear.

Since the bushing rotates (not really) the tolerances can be tightened up and since its a fitted match barrel....this helps extract the best mechanical accuracy out of the gun.

Reference the double spring.....when you start cutting barrel length on a semi auto....it also means shorter springs, my colt oacp came new with 2 recoil springs. You order a replacement wolff spring....its a single spring with a heavier OD wire. Factory seems to use double on shorter barrel recoil springs. Probably more cost effective.

In fact...worked on a colt mustang today where the owner could not get the gun back together. It had two recoil springs...inner and outer.

Thanks for answering my questions...makes sense. As I looked at the bushing it does rotate in place to allow the barrel some controlled movement yet well supported.

The slide and frame operate glass smooth on this gun...it is my only PC gun so I am impressed! I think there are more in my future...
